Bully Breed Owners Unite!!!

I just wanted to start almost like a chat thread and get to know each other, and our dogs!

If you are not sure what a Bully Breed is, the following breeds are considered:

Boxer

Alapaha Blue Blood
The American Bulldog
American Staffordshire Terrier

Boston Terrier

Bull Terrier

Bulldog

Bullmastiff

French Bulldog

Olde English Bulldogge

American Pit Bull Terrier

Renascence Bulldogge

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Victorian Bulldog

....and any mixes as well!

I would also like to include Cane Corsos, Dogo Argentinos and other large misunderstood breeds too!

Many of these dogs have unfair reputations for being dangerously aggressive -- especially pit bull breeds like the Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier and American pit bull terrier, and newly the American Bulldog has raised some brows.

I noticed that theres also a lot of misinformation about these breeds and I would be more than happy to answer any questions and educating people on these breeds as well!

I have a 1.7 year old American Bulldog named Lily which I rescued from an owner who seemed to have chained and beat her at a young age. She has turned out to be a fabulous dog, and continues to get better with training every day!

She completed her AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) a few months ago!

Here is a picture of my girl!

Aww Lucy!! So cute ! :D
  • my pit mix looks just like your gorgeous dog!! She's tiny though, only 39lbs and is 7 years old. I always thought she had american bulldog in her
    They are beauties arent they!?!?!

I can see the love in your babies eyes!!  :x

    Lily is a tad bit over 80lbs !!! :):((  >:)

When I got her she was 39 lbs at 4 months old! haha My vet guestimated that she would be anywhere from 80 - 100 lbs! Im curious to see if she continues to grow. Sometimes I still see some puppy in her!
  • We have an American Bulldog named Abby, she is almost 2 and literally brightens everyone's day!  Young and old love her, she just makes people smile with her big goofy grin and massive head...She is a rescue and we patched her life story together, goes something like this....

Picked up as a stray in NYC around 10 months old (chances are she was dumped somewhere, a big, strong, energetic girl that someone probably had no use for, no one ever came to look for her, she was not spayed or microchipped)..wound up in Animal Care and Control.  A rescue org picked her up before she was scheduled to be put down.  She got kicked out of of 1 or 2 foster homes (not sure) bc she had crazy energy and no one wanted to be bothered...found her guardian angel who was fostering her when we found her online...rest is history.  2 rounds of obedience, 1 full year of working with her on manners, walking on a leash...and she is a big pile of mush.  Has the goofiest personality and not a mean bone in her body...we def. get looks sometimes though, especially at the dog park (she LOVES other dogs) that says''"scary dog alert!"  My husband and I laugh bc she is really a baby!

    :))
  • image Tried to attach pic..not sure it worked...
  • Shes beautiful!!!!

I used to take Lily to the dog park, but after a year or so there were some dogs that were really pushing her buttons.

Thankfully, nothing happened, but we no longer go there. :( I know she misses her friends so I go on local packwalks :D

Usually owners of Bulldogs or any bully breed would suggest not to go to any type of dog park as all it takes is that one dog. Just keep your eyes open, you know your dog the best, and if you see her getting agitated... keep her moving.
  • im nervous about taking Ben to the dog park because of how other people will react to him.  Ben is one of 5 dogs in our whole family so he always gets together with them and has a ball. Our neighbors also have 3 big dogs (including a Rottie) and Ben has no issues with them.

@d2va- thank you so much!!! :)  I LOVE your family photo. its adorable!!!

Its very very nerve wrecking, especially when they arent puppies anymore. Like I said until THE one dog comes up to her/ him and its on. Our large babies will be blamed even if they didnt start the fight. Its just too risky to take a chance to have your dog taken away and euthanized, and to have BSL show up at your town.

I live in Hollywood, FL and in Miami Dade County we have BSL against pit bulls. The city of Hollywood also tried to impliment this just a few months ago, and it was (thankfully to protesters - and it being ILLEGAL lol) shut down pretty quickly.

Also, a lot of people who take their dogs to the dog park do not know how to control their own dog. So, even though yours could be trained, the others arent and are jumping on people, and mounting other dogs.

Lily does not allow anyone to come next to her womanly parts, and will get a little nasty to the males. Also, because of her age the other older, but smaller bully females want to let her know that they are the "dominant" one, and Lily has put some in their place before, and it has caused fights.

No matter how trained your dog is, if they are in a stare down with another dog, and begin to get in a scuffle the only thing you can do is run up and kick your own dog, the other dog and try to get them away from each other.

Lily had a male shih tzu annoy her to the point where he nipped her, and she went for the full on take down. There was no wounds, but I flew off the bench and I had to literally hit her and drag her away from the other dog. Mind you, 5 mins before... they were playing.

I would stick with your doggy playmates, and small group play! OR you can go to a dog park in "off" hours where theres maybe 1 other dog there.

I never think of Boxers as a bully breed, but here's our girl!
    image

She's HILARIOUS and sweet and snugly. Just the best dog we could have hoped for. She's 2 1/2 years old, eats a PMR diet, and lurrrrrves playing with other doggies (although in the last several months she has started getting touchy with some dogs when playing, so diligence is needed).

    Youre forgiven ;)

Shes so silly!! Very pretty girl!

Bully breeds come from the term bull biter. Dogs that were used to bite and hold bulls i.e. bull baiting. The boxer was one of these dogs the German version ie, Bullenbeisser or short Boxl. The boxer is the product of breeding of the Bullenbeisser and old time english bulldogs used for bull baiting. So yes the boxer is a bully breed.

    :D

that is true that it only takes one dog and one look for them to fight especially with the guard dog mentality. And YES!! I always notice how many other dogs are not trained! I can only control mine.   the off hours might be nice and especially now (in the northeast) the weather is getting cooler so not many people will be out long at the parks.

  • Thanks, @chrisnjay05212010! She's pretty goofy!

@d2va, I did know that Boxers come from bullenbeissers (they were actually bear baiters), but I still just never make the connection in my head that they're a "bully" breed. I've known way too many goofy, cuddly Boxers!

Lucy loves to lay like that, in the sun, in the backyard.  Ridiculous.  Who says dogs don't have personalities?

She also says " Wheres my breakfast?"

  • I don't have a dog right now, maybe in a few years.  I love English bulldogs, boxers, pit bulls, etc.  :)
    image
  • I'm pretty sure a Husky/Aussie mix isn't considered a bully breed, but I was feeling left out!

This is Boomer, who on more than one occassion has been confused for a wolf (kind of silly if you ask me), but I don't know if that helps him with the bully breed crowd at all!

  • I'm super late to this whole thing, but I just want to say your babies are all adorable! I don't have a "bully" breed but our dog is pretty big. He's a 1 yr old Anatolian Sheppard/St. Bernard Mix and weighs in at just over 100 lbs (which is especially hilarious since I stand at just under 5' and weigh about the same as him, lol). He's a super sweet dog though and the biggest scaredy cat I've ever met, haha.

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one! I can just see it in your pups eyes, he looks like a gentle giant. :) Below is a pic of my baby, Ringo (my kid brother named him--he was/is going through a Beatles phase, haha.)

Edit--Am I an idiot or something? The pic shows on my screen if I go in to edit my comment, but not after I save the comment. Silly computer!
