First Time Posting- Experiences on Clomid

Hello all, I've been a member for a while, but this is my first post. I was wondering about your experiences on Clomid, the changes or side effects, if any, that you experienced. My husband and I have been TTC for 17 months. My doctor finally put me on Clomid. I thought I was tolerating it fine, but about 4 dpo it's like a flip was switched. I became erratically emotional. I could feel myself slipping into a mild depression, and had to remind myself that it was just the extra hormones. At 7dpo had what I thought was implantation bleeding; a dark brown spot about a dime size, and spotting only when I wiped. I took a hpt a week later, it was neg. I tried again a week after that and it was still neg. This was also the day that I completely broke down in the middle of the grocery store for no apparent reason. Thank God my husband was with me and was able to corral me out the door quickly. The next day I got my period, but it was VERY abnormal. The blood was dark brown, almost black, and clotted. I had severe cramping on the 3rd day and a half, but the period was not heavier than usual. My periods are usually brief, about 3-4 days of constant to light flow, but this one seemed shorter, as it stared off very light for 2 days, only seeing anything when I wiped and not even needing a panty liner, followed by 1 day of heavy flow, then it went back to light. Also my breast were sore for about a week and a half before my period, but my periods over and they're still sore. Did another hpt just to be sure, and it was still neg. Emotions have stabilized for now, but round 2 starts tomorrow. I guess I just want to know if any of you have experienced anything like this, and if I should be concerned, or seeking new treatment, or just being a wuss. Thanks!!

Re: First Time Posting- Experiences on Clomid

  • Welcome to Clomid. Nothing you wrote about there strikes me as out of the norm that you should be concerned with.

  • I don't have personal experience with Clomid, but many of the ladies here have. I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience. Were you being monitored by your Dr.?

Clomid made me totally crazy and messed with my body. I'm sorry you have to deal with it and I'm sorry it's taken you 17 months to get to this place. FX this next round does it for you. Is your doc monitoring you to see if you're ovulating?

No, I'm not being monitored. I'm 28, and have ever had any medical problems, so I've never really had much communication with any doctor. I've had annuals every year since I was 18, and there was never a problem. I established a family doctor before seeing my OBGYN about infertility and did a full work up, and she said I was completely healthy. Should I be calling my OBGYN and telling her my reactions?

You really should be monitored while on Clomid (ultrasounds, bloodwork etc.) If you have what I have then you would be taking that stuff for no reason. Your age and health don't always have a correlation with your fertility. In your complete work up did they test your AMH, FSH, AFC and hormone levels?

  • I don't know what those are, so no, I guess I didn't. My OB wrote me a Rx and told me that if I didn't have a period by day 36 to call her to adjust he dosage. Like I said I've never had any medical problems, so I've never had to routinely communicate with a doctor. I always thought getting pregnant was the fun part, but I'm unfortunately learning that's not the case, and I need to more aggressive.
  • I can't weigh in on the Clomid effects, but if you haven't undergone full IF testing, you could be wasting your time and taxing your sanity taking Clomid.

It's very important you be fully monitored when taking it. It's also vital that you at the very least had an HSG done beforehand to make sure all your tubes are clear. Did your H have an SA?

Sorry for veering somewhat off topic. I just don't want to see a woman go through rounds of medication without having the groundwork testing done beforehand. GL!!

No don't apoligize for veering. We're completely in the dark here. His parents struggled with fertility, he is an only child, and they won't discuss their difficulties. I am the youngest of four, my parents are proud of the fact that when they wanted to concieve, and even when they didn't mean to, they did. The lack of support is a family matter, but I desperately need counsil on on this. It's so infuriating to me when my so many friends get pregnant within 4 months, or without even trying. I don't wan.t to rant on a first post, but I am just so tired of pregnancy and second pregnancy fb posts that I had to deactivate my account. It makes no sense to me that two people of pure love, good health, aquequate finances and good intentions cant conceive, wile the filth of drug addicts and peophiles multiply like crazy. Sorry if thats politically offensive. But I've reacently deleted my FB account and can't talk to my family, and my husband is travels alot, so I don't really have an oulet. Thanks for reading. And I wish you all the fertility you want.
  • I'm with previous posters about having some testing done to rule out issues. I would also consider moving from your OB to an RE (reproductive endocrinologist). The SA (semen analysis) would be a good place to start with your husband because compared to your having blood drawn or doing the HSG it's much less invasive. If you do move to an RE you need to check what your insurance will/won't cover first. Some don't cover much when it comes to procedures labeled IF (infertility). Before you can be more aggressive in getting treatment, you need more information about you and your husband's reproductive health. Good luck on this next round of Clomid. I hope it will work and you won't have to go through any tests.  Also, I'm sorry you don't have a lot of support from your family. I haven't told my mom about any of our TTC issues, but a few close friends know and it's been good to have them to talk with. Also, if you stick around here you'll be able to give and receive support and information.
  • I don't have any experience with Clomid but many ladies here do. I hope things work out for you! I'm sorry you have been feeling so depressed lately.

  • I didn't really have any side effects with Clomid until this most recent dose at 150. I had major mood swings. DH was great about it because he knew it was just the "clomid crazies".

If I were you, I'd definitely look into my insurance and switch to an RE ASAP. You'll get more answers and better care to treat whatever the issue may be there. Starting at the OB is one thing, but it just sounds to me like it's time to move to a RE.

    Good luck!

  • Um, you're kind of a dick.

People have given you good advice, but you seem to just be making excuses for your own ignorance.

However many "scums of the earth" get pregnant has nothing to do with your own fertility. You suck.

  • 1. Please please please do not continue with Clomid if you haven't had testing done. You at least need bloodwork, an HSG, and a SA for your DH. If, God forbid, your tubes are blocked like mine, all the Clomid in the world won't help.

    2. Clomid without monitoring is crazy. Seriously. While you could be fine, you could also overstimulate or not respond at all. You have NO idea what's going on in your body without monitoring and, quite frankly, it's dangerous.

    3. I'd seriously side eye any doc that not only gives you one but two rounds of Clomid without doing ANY testing. If you've been TTC for 17 months, I'd recommend going to an RE at this point. Infertility is their specialty and they are better prepared to help.

Good luck to you though! I hope your time comes soon! :)

OP all your feelings are very normal. Having a place to vent and get support is really important to keeping your mental health intact. It took DH and I 3 years to get pregnant and clomid wouldn't have helped at all. Please please please dump the OB who is giving you clomid without testing or monitoring and ask for a referral to a reproductive endocrinologist (RE).

Wow, I am overwhelmed. Thank you all for your input. Seriously, you've given me information I would probably never get from my DR. Except of course lilliesandvino. I came here seeking advice and support, and you clearly can't, or don't want to provide any. Respectfully, please don't comment on my posts again. Looks like I've got a few calls to make, a bit more research to do, and a new dr to find. *sigh* as if life's not complicated enough. But honestly, thank you. I'll be sticking around with probably a thousand more questions!
  • Don't post shitty, hateful things and I won't comment on them.

I really do hope you take the info given to you and talk to your doctor. It is dangerous to take that drug unmonitored.

All of this. So much. PLEASE dump the doc that is giving out Clomid like candy. It is so dangerous to do that without any of the workup or the monitoring. I'd venture to even say it's pretty damn unethical. My RE was so confident I'd get pregnant on my first round of Clomid, she didn't recommend monitoring. I never even O'd, but I didn't know because I wasn't being monitored. After the advice of these fab ladies, I insisted in firm, tactful words that I needed to be monitored on the next cycle. I can't say it enough. PLEASE drop this doc and head to an RE. Their specialty is getting women pregnant.

As for the side effects, I had hot flashes, mood swings, cramps, and vision trouble.
