Dog - Food Issues

Riley is about 3 or 3.5 years old. We adopted her two years ago and had some trouble initially finding a food she tolerated well. We finally settled on Rachel Ray Just 6, which she tolerated very well and enjoyed, and we've been feeding the same consistently for about 1.5 years.

In the last year she has occasionally gone through phases where she isn't interested in her food. She'll wait a while to eat her kibble (sometimes overnight) and/or carry of small amounts and spit it out of the carpet then eat a piece or two at a time. Sometimes this is accompanied by regurgitating food, which she'll then re-eat without issue, or coughing as if she may vomit, but not actually getting to that point. The first time this happened we thought the food was bad and replaced it - immediate improvement. But a handful of occurrences later and I've got no doubt the food is just fine.

She's been to the vet and is healthy. Her teeth are good. She is playful and shows no other symptoms or signs of distress. Bowels are regular and normal.

Any thoughts on what might be going on? Should we look for a new food? Or is there something in particular I should ask the vet to check that we may not have?

If she is a healthy weight I wouldn't be concerned at this point. If she continues to lose weight I would have another vist with your vet.

Some dogs are great at regulating their weight and if your pup's energy requirements have started to change than it may be part of the reason she doesn't eat as much.

  • Wow just fixed my last post for some terrible auto correct!

If she is at a healthy weight I would just monitor her for now.

  • I have a german shepherd who is a picky eater like that too. Like others have said as long as she is eating and is not underweight, there is no cause for alarm. If a dog is hungry it'll eat :)

If you're really bothered though, try changing food when she gets bored of what you're feeding her. I have tried pretty much everything under the sun with my GSDs and still have not been consistent with any one brand or flavor. After a while they just don't want that food, but the minute I walk through the door with a new smell they chomp through bowls for weeks... until they get bored again.

Another option would be having a little bit of canned food mixed in with dry food; it never fails. Beneful makes mini cans specifically for that purpose. Alternatively, Natural Balance makes a food roll that I grate over dry food as well to encourage my picky eaters.

    Good luck!
  • I highly recommend avoiding beneful in general

For once in my life, I'm going to agree with Aggiebug. :-O

Beneful is garbage. There are way better wet (and dry) foods out there. They don't come from the grocery store.

  • This happened to our dog, too.  He was not interested in his food and when he did eat, it was because he hadn't eaten all day.  When he did eat, he would spit out certain bits.  I just changed his food from Blue Wilderness Healthy Weight to a grain-free salmon and vegetable food.  He LOVES the new food (although it smells like fish).

He may just be bored.  It happens.

  • Sorry, hadn't been on TN for a while. We've started alternating flavors of food and so far that seems to be helping. We've not had any vomiting or out right refusal of food in quite a while. Hopefully it was just boredom!
