Iron Supplements?

I got my annual physical recently and bloodwork showed that I have mild anemia. The doctor told me to take an OTC iron supplement for 6 months and then come in for a check-up. My question to you ladies is, does anyone take iron supplements and if so, which do you recommend? Are all iron supplements created equal?

Re: Iron Supplements?

  • I haven't taken an iron supplement myself but I do know that the ferrous form is supposed to be better absorbed and that you may have to experiment with different forms of iron (capsules, chewable, liquid, etc) if one form upsets your stomach.
  • I have to do this both because I have iron-deficient anemia and take a medication that lowers my RBC (red blood cell) count.  I take chelated iron once a day (usually around lunch time) as it is absorbed by your system easier.
