I don't remember any mention of any relatives.  Although everyone who is anyone is hiding something in this series.

Well, she has the same last name as Tris, so that's the assumption.

Yeah, I figured based on the last name, she has some relation to Tris, but throughout the series I don't remember any mention of aunts or grandmothers.

Not saying that there can't be aunts or grandmothers, which makes me think that this can't be a good thing.

I'm about 10 pages into book 3 so I don't know for sure... but here is my theory... Edith is Tris' Grandmother.  When Tris went through the "poison" room near Jeanine's office, the voice said "... Second Generation...".  My guess is that Tris is 2nd Gen (born in a faction), her dad is 1st Gen (born in a faction), & Edith is one of the original members (born outside of the faction-Chicago in the "real" world).

But, like I said, this is only my theory.

My theory is similar to GreenBride's. Although I thought she is her mother's mother (although her being in Erudite makes more sense). Didn't Tris's mother say that her own mother encourage her to choose another faction that is safer than Dauntless? I thought that could be Edith.
