Any Ideas?

My dog Rocky has always been a couch potato. But he still was always up for a game of tug or some rough housing. Lately he has been listless, and his eyes and nose are runny. No interest in playing whatsoever. It's been about 3 weeks, and no change. He has been to the vet 3 times, we have tried Benadryl, antibiotics, steroids, and now we are waiting on blood tests.

A few days ago he stopped eating his kibble. I softened it with milk and he ate the whole bowl. Had his teeth checked, nothing. Had his neck checked, nothing. He still has interest in soft treats, but won't eat anything hard. The vet said a tonsil was slightly inflamed, so maybe hard foods hurt his throat. He still has an appetite, is still going out 2-4 times a day, happily gets in the car, and near as I can tell his potties are normal. But he doesn't play with me or the other dogs, and really only gets up for food, treats or to go outside.

The vet mentioned he may be doing it for attention. Does anyone have any idea what else it could be?

Re: Any Ideas?

  • I don't have any idea what could be going on, but I'm glad you're working with a vet to figure it out. I hope they find something soon!

As a side note, I wouldn't recommend softening your dog's food with milk. Water or broth is better for them (dairy can cause diarrhea, though tolerance varies dog to dog).
