Honeymoon in Key West

My fiance and I are starting to plan our honey moon and we are going to Key West in June after our wedding the previous September. We are looking at staying at The Authors in Key West. I am wondering what everyone's experiences have been like in Key West and what you had the most fun doing.  TIA

It looks like such an amazing time. The pictures you took under water, did you have a special camera to take them?

  • Yes, we had an underwater camera. I do NOT recommend the one we have though. We have an Olympus Stylus Tough. Actually, it's our second one. The first one leaked our 2nd to last day of the first KW trip. Stupid me, bought another one. That one made it through our big March trip but, died the 2nd day into our 2nd KW trip. Luckily it was under warranty so I had it fixed. It does work now and has made it through a few other trips but I don't trust it. It's also now really pixelating our photos.

I have since bought a dicapac for my iPhone. It does work in the ocean but I have not had a chance yet to go snorkeling with it to see what the quality of the pics will be. I'll find out in March when we go to Jamaica.

Once the Olympus dies I plan on going on Amazon and researching other brands.

If you do go to KW and are into snorkeling go to Ft. Taylor beach and go out to the rocks. There were a ton of really pretty fish out there. Unfortunatly I never got pics of them. The first and second times there the camera had died and our third time there it rained the whole week.

  • For snorkeling we bought a pentax that is good for up to 40 ft I think. We love it. Took it to BVIs.
  • We had such a great time there! IF you have time go to Peppers of Key West it is like a hot sauce and jam tasting bar and it was delicious and really fun to try out all the products. We also did a snorkeling cruise on a catemeran but if you get motion sickness I recommend taking something before you go (I got sick)!

We also ate here i think the night my husband proposed-http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g34345-d447779-Reviews-Point_5_Tapas_Wine_Bar-Key_West_Florida_Keys_Florida.html

Afterwards we walked down Duval street and did a mini pub/bar crawl just the two of us and had an absolute blast.

  • Make sure you go to Dry Tortugas.  It's a half hour travel by prop plane or 2 hours  by catamaran.

Tons of things to see; it is not quite a beachy kind of vacation. There are beaches but they're few (and if you object to nudity, there's lots of it there on their beaches.)
  • We also did Key West as part of our honeymoon. We stayed in Miami and drove down for a weekend. The ride between Miami and Key West is considered one of the most scenic in America, and it's nice to see the different sites on the way down. In Key West itself, we also did a mini pub-crawl, toured the Hemingway House, took the island tour on the Conch Train, went to the butterfly museum (there's a room with tons of live butterflies,) and rented a scooter for a few hours. You also have to go to the square at the end of Duval St. to watch the sunset one night, and we had a really nice time on the sunset cruise: http://dangercharters.com/wind-wine-sunset-sail/

We didn't really spend much time at the beach there because there were just so many other things to do. Have a great time!
