NBR: Soda Stream

Does anyone use one of these? I'm admittedly a Diet Coke addict. Coke Zero more specifically.  I've thought of using a soda stream since they seem to be the Keurig of carbonated drinks.   If you use one, is it worth it?  Does it cost the same or less than buying soda?  Is it easy to use? I see that Haute Look is running a sale on them today which reminded me.  It looks like they have reasonable options beyond just soda.

Re: NBR: Soda Stream

  • We got one for Christmas a few years ago and I really like it. We tried a few different flavors and I've foud it's best with the citrus sodas (lemon-lime, orange, pink grapefruit). We also use it without flavor pretty often. DH is not as much of a fan as I am though.

  • I love the idea of this, and if I had the kitchen of my dreams, there would be room for a SodaStream on my counter.  Since I do not have anything even remotely resembling the kitchen of my dreams, I just don't have the space for it.  I think it has to be cheaper than buying soda.
  • This is on my list for when I have extra money lying around.  When I was looking at them and pricing them out, some of the flavors were not as cost effective as others.

I think it would be great to have the lemon-lime on hand for when someone in the household gets sick.  You don't have to store a case of soda for just in case and you don't have to run out and buy it while you are sick.

  • I would think so too @SusieBW.  I'll have to look up how much counter space it takes since I don't have a large kitchen (read: tiny) so that would be a factor.  I would have to come up with a break even for J since he's all about saving money but doesn't like to buy appliances. Me? I just love gadgets.  Especially ones that do useful things.

  • We got one for Christmas a couple of years ago and I really like it. There are only a couple of premade flavors we like and neither of them are the Soda Stream brand, but neither of us drink diet soda either (both drink regular) and the Soda Stream brand is all diet flavors. We like the Country Time Lemonade ones though, and we will often just make sparkling water and add our own flavors/fruit to it.

And I think that this would have to be something that lives on the counter.  If I have to break it out of the pantry every time I want to use it, I'm not going to use it very often (Exhibits A and B: my Kitchenaid Stand Mixer and my blender).
But I think it's pretty small and doesn't take up all that much space.  I wish my Keurig was smaller than it is.
  • I keep thinking I want to try this, DH drinks a LOT of soda. I just worry that I won't like the way it tastes and then it's a lot of money spent on something that isn't getting used.

  • If you want more time to think about it, the HauteLook price is the same as the regular Walmart price, they just don't have the pink one.

Thanks!  That's good to know.  I'm so bad about making impulse purchases.

  • Neither DH, nor I are huge soda drinkers, so I don't think it would be worth the investment. We will occasionally drink soda when we are out eating, at friends houses, or sometimes we will buy it if we're having people over to our house. Other than that we really don't buy soda so it wouldn't be worth it for us.

That being said, I really wish that someone I knew would buy one so that I could try it. I'm always so intrigued.

Plus at least you can return things to Walmart, I think most sites like HauteLook you can only return for credit to their site.

  • My father gave me one a few years ago for Christmas. I returned it. Just wouldn't use it. I generally drink pellegrino so it does me no good.
