XP: Thanksgiving for 10...in one room

Hi -- I cross posted this from Holidays because it seems like this board is not getting a lot of traffic nowadays. Sniff!

I am hosting Thanksgiving for 10 in a townhouse with a single, small living space. I'm finding this really uncomfortable because there is no place for people to sit and talk, have drinks and apps, before or after the meal -- everything will have to happen in the one room. Is this possible? The other Thanksgiving gatherings I've been to have had a large kitchen or family room for folks to mingle, and then dinner was served in a formal dining room or other room converted for that purpose.  My guests will walk in the door and BOOM there's the table, squashed in between a gigantic television and a couch, and they will have to sit there for the entire day. This is not a crowd that does buffet: several of the guests are old and one is in a wheelchair, so they will want to be securely seated for the meal.

Any suggestions for how to organize this?

Re: XP: Thanksgiving for 10...in one room

  • is it all family? I understand the desire to set and decorate a table, but would it be ok if you had the table not in the room until shortly before the meal was to be served and had a couple of people help you to put the table in the room and set it? or would that be too much? I don't have any other suggestions unless there is a spare room somewhere for you to move the couch or TV to during the time your guests are over. -

or do you have space in the kitchen where a couple of people could sit and chat while you are cooking? like a small breakfast nook area that would be out of the way enough for you to still cook while they're there?

  • Unfortunately, no. Oh well, maybe I will do a "Mayflower Crossing" theme and we can all pretend we're smashed in steerage.
  • Or maybe you can just hope for super awesome, unseasonably warm weather and have part of the day spent outside in the yard?

  • Well, you could always take the table down after dinner and have the mingling then. Or hope for warm weather, lol.
