Re: The Facebook Photo That Reportedly Got an Army Vetern banned from her daughters school

  • I don't think she should have been banned. The principal should have privately told her that guns are not allowed on school grounds, even if she has a concealed carry. And nobody should post a concealed carry permit on Facebook, thats stupid.

So are the comments on that site. I'll never understand how some people are so afraid of public education. Also, I assume the school is public, if it were private, then the school has the right to ban whomever they want as long as it's not racially/sexually/gender discriminatory.
  • The key word in "conceal carry permit" is the word "conceal," which means to hide, so why she posted on FB (a public, non-concealed place) makes no sense.

  • the thing is that in the classes you have to take to get your concealed carry permit usually include and exhaustive section on the places where you may and may not carry your gun. Also, typically the people who go to the trouble of getting properly licensed for a conceal carry license are not the people who are going nuts and shooting up schools and workplaces.

I suspect that there is more to the story than we see here. Something tells me that this parent and principal have had some sort of run-in and the principal felt like that picture was some sort of idle threat afterwards. It just doesn't make any sense otherwise. I mean why would she be looking at the mom's facebook page?

In some states, there are no classes required at all. You fill out a form, do a background check, and you've got your carry permit. Carry permit holders are not automatically responsible people.

This is true.  I just heard that the state next to us (Kansas) is now approving people to carry loaded guns in their car without even having a conceal carry permit.....that makes me nervous!

While holding a concealed carry permit does not mean that people will be responsible, the mother in question here is also an Army veteran. They do go through extensive training on a variety of firearms (based on their MOS (Military Occupation Specialties). In Georgia, a concealed weapons permit requires three background checks (one state and two federal). There are restrictions based on whether you have been involved in criminal activity, have been in mental hospital, or a drug/alcohol treatment center. As far as I know, mandatory gun safety classes depend on the county, but I do know that in many states you don't need to take the class if you are military/prior military because you are already trained on firearms. In regards to schools, Georgia laws do not permit guns on the premise except if you are dropping off or picking up a student, and even then gun must be stay in the car.

The mother is being allowed to switch her daughter over to a different school, but I don't know of any legal reason why she should be in this predicament in the first place. I would understand if she had threatened the school, but she is a volunteer who is also exercising her right to bear arms.
  •   An other example of how a power hungry petty little bureaucrat has done damage to so many people and families.
