Talk to me about a hysteroscopy

I had a saline sono this morning and a 1cm polyp was found in my uterus so the doctor said I needed to have a hysteroscopy to remove it.

I know some of you have had this done but can't remember who. If you've had it done, what was it like? Was it painful or pretty easy?

From what Dr. Google is saying, it doesnt seem too intrusive, but I also dont think its going to be totally painless since there will be the removal of the polyp. I imainge it might be a bit like a tissue biopsy up there. Probobly cramping and spotting afterwards. I would ask to speak with a nurse when scheduleing to fully prepare you before hand.

Good luck and keep us updated!!

  • GL with it, Xan! I hope it goes well and isn't too painful for you (if they're removing a polyp, there's probably going to be some pain, but I can't imagine it would be unbearable).

  • I had one, and it was NBD.  I took 4 motrin before to help minimize cramping.  The actual hysteroscopy part was pretty cool actually.  I got to see the inside of my uterus on the screen, I'm sort of a science geek, so you can choose not to look if it makes you uneasy.  I did end up having a biopsy while she was in there because she saw some abnormal tissue... not gonna lie, that part hurt.  It turned out to be endometritis likely from prior MC, and was easliy treated, but I did need a follow-up biopsy to make sure it was all cleared up - again it sucked.  The biopsies were over quick and I just had some period type cramps for the rest of the day, nothing major.  I hope yours is quick and easy.  Good Luck!

  • Thanks for the insight @sandollar1010 and thanks everyone else for the support. My regular ObGyn is calling me tomorrow to talk to me about it because my RE couldn't get it in until the new year and he nor I wanted to wait that long.

I was all excited that I only had one more test to go (the hsg on Friday) so it's frustrating to have to add something else but I'm banking on it all being worth it one day :)

  • @xan921 I had one a couple months ago. Unfortunately it was pretty painful b/c my cervix is very small and they had trouble getting the device through it. I'm pretty sure that is not the norm though. Once they got things going it was pretty quick and relatively painless except for some cramping. The actual procedure itself (other than getting poked in the cervix over and over again) was not much worse than a long pap smear.

Best of luck. Sorry you have to do this.

  • I had a pretty similar experience to sandollar for mine, minus the endo part. It was my first test for IF and I cried all the way home, but I think that was more just me getting upset about dealing with IF rather than actual pain. It was cool to see the inside of my ute on camera.
