Hello

Hello!

I'm just moving over from TK where I lurked for awhile and never really posted, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I graduated in the spring and unfortunately the paperwork is taking a lot longer than expected (yay for schooling in the States and wanting to work in Canada) so I'm currently working odd jobs until everything comes through and I can get started in my field.

H was laid-off several weeks after I graduated and recently got a job so we're back to having two incomes again. Luckily we were able to keep our wedding under budget. We've been lucky that we don't have any cc debit but I have some very pretty student loans that we'll have to start paying off within the next month or so. We're currently holding onto all the money we got at the wedding and the money we saved by being under budget but once my paperwork comes through all but the money we're going to keep for e-savings is going to be thrown at my loans.

I feel like I lucked out with H because when I mentioned using the money from our wedding this way he told me that's what he had been think about doing too.

I'm looking forward to chatting and learning a lot from you!

Re: Hello

  • Welcome!  As a former frequent poster on TK's e-board, I will say that this board is a lot less intimidating :)

Good to hear you two are on the same page - money is not a four-letter word, and it's important to be able to talk about it with your spouse.

  • Thanks! I agree the e-board was a little scary, haha. It's really not, I'm finding its one of the harder things to amalgamate. But luckily we haven't had too many disagreements over it
  • Welcome! Glad your hubby is on the same page!
  • Ooo you've peaked my interest, what's the "e-board?"
  • Oh, and welcome of course!
  • Welcome! I'm new here too, and just starting to pay back my loans as well. I've been getting really interested in personal finance, and this is a great place to talk about it (since it can be so awkward to talk money with IRL friends).

That's awesome that you and H are both on the same page! We are taking a slower approach to our student loans, but that works for us. I am trying to get ahead with an extra payment before the real first due date in Dec, and am going for the ten year plan even though it's going to cut into our savings goals.

@ducktale, the e-board is the etiquette board on TK. I posted there a fair bit too, but not nearly enough to be considered a "reg" or attract much notice. It's very entertaining and I found it helpful, but it could also get quite heated (mostly towards people with awful ideas). I stuck around a bit after the wedding but then just started losing interest in wedding talk.
  • Yeah the e-board is intense.  Granted, people have some awful awful ideas.... but still.  There are ways to tell somebody their idea breaks etiquette without saying things like, "that's so damn rude and your idea sucks - your guests will hate you forever if you do that."  Or whatever.

Very entertaining, but also a bit scary.  There was a time last spring when it got so heated that TK Gods or whoever they are banned a bunch of regs all at once without warning.  So then there was an e-board protest and everything about the terms and conditions for posting.  That's about the time I lost interest in wedding stuff.

I mostly posted on the e-board regarding thank you notes, just because that's my primary soapbox issue.  You get bratty brides now and then say things like, "How am I supposed to thank somebody for this crap?"  And that just flies all over me because it's so ungrateful.  That's when I tell the story about how I successfully wrote a sincere thank you note for an egg platter that had technicolor fish painted on it.  You also get people who admit that they got married 8 months ago and they still haven't "found time" to write a thank you note to a single guest.  I call BS on that.

I still post on registering and gifts now and then because I collect china (through ebay primarily).  So I chime in when people ask about the differences between porcelain and stoneware, for instance, or when they're trying to get suggestions on patterns.  I also try to talk people out of honeymoon registries because too many folks end up charging a honeymoon on their credit card, assuming they will be reimbursed by their guests with the honeymoon registry.  My experience was that we received 95% boxed gifts, and not enough cash to cover even one of our flights.  So I am an advocate for the "pay for it yourself" model.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • I agree about HM registries. I'm from a group that's about 50/50 cash/gifts, but it doesn't make sense to lose 5% off the top AND risk offending people. If you're from the northeast you get plenty of cash either way.

It is nice to be on a board where people disagree respectfully! Some ideas were awful over there, but I pitied the people who were just innocently clueless. I knew zip about weddings, but lurked first so never got flamed. This is the only board on TN I've gotten into though; the rest are either less relevant for me or dead.
  • They were banning people for "rudeness"? Just may have to go peak on over there...

I post most most often on the Bump, and those boards are notorious for snarkiness. I love it, I think it's entertaining. Sometimes people ask very stupid questions (ex: I just got done with my period yesterday but now I'm having cramping, could I be pregnant?) so they get snarky responses. And sometimes (often) newbies misinterpret straightforward facts as being blunt/rude. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I don't think I'd have stuck around very long if it were all just boring fluff answers.

However I do appreciate the respectfulness of this board.

  • Oh yeah all sorts of regs got banned for rudeness.  It was awhile back, but if you do a search for it you'll find the call to arms to fight TK gods.  They even have a phrase over there: "GBCK"... or "Good bye cruel knot" when people leave because they've been flamed for crappy wedding ideas and can't take it.

I've lurked on the bump, mostly to try to get a sense of what a baby will cost so we can have an idea of that before buying our first house (we're still a couple years away), but I can't handle some of those boards.  Then again, I was raised by a developmental psychologist who was always very open about exactly how I was being parented, so I probably have more opinions on that sort of thing than is reasonable for a childless person my age. Sometimes I want to be like, "The reason your child is a little terrorist probably has something to do with your parenting methods."  But I don't.

I've mostly lurked on the baby gear board to figure out what all the "necessary" stuff is going to cost and how long it will take us to save for that with various mortgage options.... and holy crap.  It makes me wonder what people did before the rock n play was invented.

  • I don't think the people who got banned were rude-personally I think they were banned for giving advice that would cause people to spend less on weddings (ie don't beg your parents for money! Dry bar is fine! Don't waste money on bedazzled bridesmaid totes!). TB sounds similar; I'm sure I'll enjoy it when it's baby time in a few years.
  • Well I think they developed a complaint button or something - so people who didn't like what they were being told could report the regs.  Then one day all of a sudden a bunch of regs couldn't log in because they had all been banned at once.

I don't think they were rude either, but that's how TK gods defended themselves for the widespread ban.  There was also an open letter from TK Carly (I think?) that basically said everybody needed to behave themselves because the way new brides and TK Gods were being treated was completely unfair.  She actually said that her employees were being cyber bullied by the regs.  So until we could learn to behave ourselves TK Gods were going to have to intervene and keep banning people to keep the conversation "civilized."

It was kind of incredible - all sorts of drama.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  •  Yikes. I think I would have been banned.

That sounds like a similar tone. People give good advice but it's not what posters want to hear.

The mods on the bump only ban people who violate the rules, which are pretty specific. The regs know how to toe the line, it's the newbs who get all upset and don't understand the rules as well, they're the ones who cross the line and get banned.

It's fun over there. A good mix of information and entertainment. And a lot of good gifs.

  • I find it slightly amusing that I found this board and got my loan repayment request in the same day. It's nice to know exactly what I owe, I had an idea before but not an exact amount.

I've been on the e-boards recently, but mostly when I'm bored. The drama that goes on there is better than a soap opera. But I've been finding my interest is quickly diminishing.

@hoffse that's what GBCK means? I was able to figure out most of the abbreviations that people used but that one I hadn't been able to piece together.

@Ductale do people actually ask about cramping if its a day after their period... I may need to head over to the bump now. It sounds like it could be a pretty interesting place.

  • Yep, that's what GBCK means - they use it like a verb.  It took me awhile to figure it out as well.  They say things like, "She GBCK'd" which I think is supposed to inspire an image of a bride stamping her foot, throwing a tantrum, and then removing herself from the boards.

I still don't know what all the acronyms mean.  And some of the acronyms on the bump are like a foreign language to me.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • I had figured out one or two on my own and then someone made a post asking for an explanation about some of the common acronyms, that list helped me figure out more too. I always had an 'aha' moment when I figured out a new one.

Are there any unusual ones on the nest?

  • None that I've noticed - but I really just hang out here for the most part.  We sometimes use financial acronyms (APR, APY, HCOL, HELOC, CD, etc.), but they are real ones as opposed to ones the boards just made up.

I suppose we do still use H, DH, W, DW, and LO... but those are pretty standard throughout all the boards I think.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • Oh man, speaking of the e-board.... story on page one about a greenback shower where the hostess hired a male stripper with all the grandmas in attendance.

Sometimes I wish I was still in wedding mode, because that board was so ridiculous.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • @Belthil People ask "I have x symptoms, am I pregnant?" All the time and then give ridiculous explanations why they think that. Here's one from yesterday:

I don't even think that one got snarky, on the TTGP board they go crazy for posts like that.

    Welcome OP!

I lurk on TTGP because I am pathetic and wish I was TTC haha. Plus I don't want to be flamed someday! I saw that post yesterday and all I could think was why would you ask that? A lot of people just need to lurk a little before they post.

I do love this board. So helpful.

Oh my god - I just literally laughed out loud and I'm still at work... The guy next door was like, "What's so funny?"

  • I know. These posts are almost daily. I'm scared people with so little knowledge of their bodies/pregnancy are trying to get pregnant. I'm thinking of gathering compiling some of these posts and sending them to Washington as evidence on why we need better sex ed in this country. These people are in their 20s and 30s.

Though I will say it makes for some good entertainment.
  • I haven't been on TB in awhile.  I was honestly so tired of all the snark and b!tchiness.  The only board I ever really liked was my BMB (birth month board), but that's dead now since they all moved to FB a couple years ago.  I was starting to think I was wasting too much time on TB so I got off of it.

  • When I was in law school my wills and trusts prof. gave us a ranking about the legal level of cognition required to do certain things in life and have them be binding by law.  These were, in order from highest to lowest:

    1) Sign a will
    2) Sign a contract
    3) Consent to marriage
    4) Become a parent

    Alarming, right?
