laminate or vinyl "wood" planks

I am about to remove the carpet in our living/family room and switch to flooring. I have wood floors underneath but they are not in great condition. I don't think they will last very long if I have them buffed and polished since it looks like they were buffed/polished once already (owner before us).

I am considering putting in laminate or vinyl wood planks over the existing floor. Would these damage the hard-wood that's there? Which is better - vinyl or laminate?

Thanks!

  • True hardwood floors can be resanded several times.  Before you throw that out as an option, you should should have a refinisher take a look.

  • Ditto PP.  Hardwood can be refinished more than once
  • Look at adura brand vinyl flooring, it's beautiful and looks like wood or stone.
I am going with adura because I do to want to worry about damaging hardwood and shrinking

-my husband is a flooring guy :-)
