Light up night traffic question

I saw in the holiday post about light up night...it's next Friday right?

So we are driving through Pittsburgh that night. We are coming from NY and stopping at my parents house south of the city. I didn't think about light up night!

We come from 79 (think coming from grove city area) and usually just go right through 279, liberty bridge and tunnel to 51S. Should I just avoid that? Will just taking 79S the whole way to get south of the city be a better idea? Its a little longer that way but we will go it if traffic is an issue. Or will we hit traffic too depending on time?

We haven't decided on when exactly we are leaving yet but I am now worried we will be hitting the area when people will be leaving the city!! What time would be best to really avoid?! I haven't been to light up night in ages, not sure when people usually stay till. Or how bad traffic is now.

Why does Pittsburgh always kill me with traffic?!

Re: Light up night traffic question

  • I don't think that route would be too bad.  Most of the festivities start earlier because of Childern and all so really things kick off around 5 or so I would say if you were coming through either before 5 ( then you may have outbound rush out on the liberty and 51 because everyone will be trying to get the heck out) or between maybe 6 ( later end of "normal" rush hour) and 9 or so you will probably be ok.

I don't think there is really a Mad rush out of town with light up night.

usually there is a site for it with all the times and things....

As of right now we would probably be coming in around 9 or so. Looks like fireworks are 9:30 so maybe if we can make sure we are through before that. I just remember a bit of a mad rush after fireworks when I used to go

  • April, your parents live in Washington right? I would suggest just staying on 79S and avoiding downtown fully!
  • Everyone who is coming in should be in town by then - just have to watch with people leaving but you should be ok
