WIJFR: Where'd You Go Bernadette (sp) FBC Inspiration Post

Just checked in for FBC and reminded myself that I need to post about the strong female character that inspired me in the book.

I think there were a few strong ladies in the book, but the strongest was Bee (in my opinion). She didn't give two shits what anyone thought of her (at the age that even the MOST self-aware girls are most vulnerable) and decided what she wanted and pursued it, clearing any obstacle that popped up. From the way it sounded, her parents absolutely loved her but weren't terribly involved as parents (her dad working, her mom kind of letting her do whatever) so she could have turned out way, way differently but was probably the most grounded person in the family.

Bernadette was a strong woman who let one thing define her for too long. She was an unintentional pioneer who also went about her business not caring one bit about other opinions. These types of personalities always inspire me because I definitely care too much a lot of the time. She did kind of drop out of life, though, after the 20 mile house was demolished (which, yes, was a dick move but I side-eyed the 15 year funk it caused). The Antarctica trip, though, seems to have revitalized her and I think she'll end up back to owning life as she gets back into it.

Audrey was strong but aggressively so until the end. She looooved to play the victim and placed a lot of value on social position. Once confronted with the consequences of her actions, though, she turned it around and seems like she'll be a completely different person.

The only woman I actively disliked by the end of the book was Soo Lin. For someone who was so adamant about not being victimized, she sure didn't seem to consider her own part in the things that happened to her.

Anyway, I loved this book! It was a five-star for me and I thought with so many interesting women, it would be a good match for the strong female character category of FBC.

I hated Audrey. She tried to redeem herself towards the end but she just annoyed me too much.

Soo Lin, home wrecking whore. That's all I have to say about her.

I loved Bee and Bernadette. They had such a connection and regardless of the obstacle, they looked it right in the face and said F you.

  • I also hated Audrey, but in that good way. She was a bit over-the-top, but overall I think she was very well-crafted and perfectly represents a category of people I've known and disliked in my own life.

  • Oh man, Soo Lin.  I couldn't stand her. I liked Bernadette a lot by the end but at the beginning, I wasn't so sure.

I almost want to re-listen to this one because it was so much fun.
