Does this seem odd to you? HR and hiring managers please come in!

I went on an interview today and everything seemed to be going well until it was time for me to ask questions. I asked why the position was open and the interviewer seemed uncomfortable and just said we have a lot of work. Okay, maybe that one was legit, but then I asked if they had any concerns about me as a candidate. He seemed shocked that I asked this and said, he needed to mull things over before he could answer that. I have been on several interviews in the past and never had any issues asking those questions. Should this be a red flag?  I just seemed odd to me because I never experienced that kind of reactions. Those are pretty standard interviewee questions. (I do have several interviews in the coming weeks. The jobs are all in the legal field.)

  • I'm not sure where you were interviewing, but my old company used to have a habit of just grabbing people who were free to do interviews versus people who had experience doing them or had been trained to do them.

Because I had experience as a system administrator and a database administrator, I used to get called anytime they needed to do interviews for those positions even if they weren't where I was working.  I also was never given any kind of training on how to interview (questions I couldn't ask, information about where they would be assigned so I could ask detailed relevant questions, etc).

So if that company is anything like mine, that might explain why you got the reactions you did.

  • Asking  why a job is available is a standard interview question.

Either this guy knows nothing about what is standard an an interview or maybe he's not as forthcoming as he should be.

That they need extra personnel to handle the workload is fine. So is giving that as a reply but I can't see what he finds so unusual when it comes to your question.

You can find interview questions on the web.
  • I guess I wouldn't worry about it at this point. I think your questions were reasonable. I agree with pp that sometimes employers grab whomever to interview, especially if it's a smaller firm. For my current position I was interviewed by people who had no idea what the job really was, or even the schedule. My boss and I laugh about it now.
