Need coat suggestions

I want a new winter coat. I despise being cold and have a decent walk from my parking lot to my building at work so I like to keep warm.

My current coat is a Columbia one. It's going on 10 years maybe. It really does keep me warm but my biggest issue with it is length. It's really only to my waist/top of hips. It's also pretty heavy/bulky. It seems like things have changed in the last 10 years and there are a lot lighter options but still warm.

So I want something that covers my butt. Very warm. Has a hood. No pea coat, I just don't find them warm enough even ones claiming to be. And doesn't cost a TON! I'm not spending $300, but know it will be over $100.

I'm also very small/petite so some stuff is just too big. Like lands end coats don't fit me well.

Any recommendations? I want to find something and see if I can get it with any sales around the holidays.

  • I was going to suggest Lands End. My last two coats were from them.  A long fleece with a hood that I jokingly call my "mom coat" is my choice for just running around because it is warm and not too thick. Then I have a down coat of similar bum covering length for the very cold days.  Both are in tall sizes, I wonder if they also offer petite?  I also find I am warmer with a good hat, sometimes in addition to my hood, depending on my reason for being outside.

They do have petites but they don't have a small enough size. I looked at reviews online and some other small petite ladies said that they are too big for someone my size. I may see if I can try on some at some point again. I've tried in the past and found they were too big and I've had that issue with most of their stuff.

  • I was also going to suggest Land's End.  They just had a 30% off sale and I ordered two wool coats in petite size (I am short, so coat sleeves are usually too long on me).  They have really warm parkas that hit below your hips (at mid thigh and knee length or below).  I do have one of their parkas in regular size, and it is a good fit for me - not too big/bulky, sleeves not too long, etc.  I have always lucked out with their coats, so I don't have any other suggestions!

what about a larger girls size?  I would check measurements in the size guides, but I sometimes have the same issue, but opposite in some ways. Some places have tall sizes but they don't start any smaller than a medium. And I am more of a small or xsmall depending on the cut. so I feel your pain.

I have looked at their girl coats and they are definitely not what I'm looking for.

Their coats' smallest size even in petite is xsmall which is 2-4. I'm a 0 and find LE stuff can run big at times. The one coat I like online has a review from somebody about my size and she said it was too big. LE just started carrying xxsmall petite in their dresses. I was so excited because I could actually find something to fit me there! But doesn't seem like they've expanded sizes in coats yet. I have a LE close though so I may check it out again. I just know I've tried in the past and was disappointed in the fit.

My Columbia coat is an extra small and fits great. So I think LE stuff is just a bit big and odd fitting for me.

  • I struck gold by having a friend of mine send me a friends and family bloomingdales coupon... i bought my jacket last year for about $320 and it was the best purchase EVER! I'm super picky with jackets and i don't like spending a ton of money but this coat is warm and will last me many years! I had bought a jcrew jacket a few years ago and after a year of wearing it it was already tearing on the inside. it was a beautiful jacket but it wasn't warm enough either. i decided to make one solid splurge and make an investment in a coat that i could wear for years, be comfortable in it and really get great use out of it. Without that coupon though i wouldn't have been able to purchase it!

Good luck! Def google around for some sales!

  • If you are looking at wool, I love my J.Crew coats, but you have to splurge for the Thinsulate which makes all the difference. They have sales all the time for 20-30% off if you watch their emails.

How about North Face parka? Macy's should be having their coupon that has little to no exclusions soon and you can score a good deal then. You may have luck with their kids coats.
