Is this normal?

Hello!  I'm newly married (10/19) and DH and I are TTC!  I'm 31 and he's 33.  I've been on the pill since I was 19 and I am off now.  I got my last cycle which started on my wedding day (SUPER bummer!), and according to the 28 day cycle, I was supposed to have my cycle again Saturday.  It's Tuesday now, and no signs.  I took at test Saturday, came back negative.  But, could I be pregnant already?  Or is a late cycle normal after going off the pill? Thank you for your help!  This is all new to me!

Re: Is this normal?

  • You could be pregnant, but most likely your body is just regulating. It's totally normal for the cycles to take some time to figure themselves out after the pill.

By the way, I read your post as you were 31 and your H was 19. Lol.

  • Welcome and congrats on your recent marriage!

This is completely normal.  It can take up to a year for your body to regulate coming off of birth control.  How long it takes generally has nothing to do with the length of time you were on birth control though.

Without charting or using OPKs, you really don't know when you ovulated, making it difficult to know when to expect your period.  Once you think you're "late", the general rule of thumb is to test once a week until you either get a positive test, your period, or reach 60 days without a period (then call your doctor).

  • If this is your first cycle after stopping BCPs, you can't guarantee it's going to be 28 days (mine pretty much never has been 28 days except while using BC).

Sure, it's possible get pregnant right away. But without my ute goggles, I can't tell you what your chances are of being pregnant already.

Keep testing every week as long as AF doesn't show. Then start charting your cycles so you can really know when AF is actually late (which you can't know unless you know when you ovulated, which can vary for many women).

  • Welcome and congrats on your marriage!  I agree with the ladies that it can take a while for your cycles to regulate after coming off of BC.

This exactly! I still don't think my body has fully regulated from coming off BCP and it's been a year.

  • Exactly what PP said.  You may be pregnant, but most likely its your body getting used to NOT being on the pill.  I would probably take a test and see, just in case.  Also, Congratulations on your marriage.  Exciting!!!

  • Your cycles most likely are not 28 day cycles. When you're on the pill you don't really have a cycle at all it's a pretend one. Take a test a week and if you hit 60 days without a positive call your doctor.

Congrats on your marriage and if you stick around there is a wealth of knowledge for you to pick up here!
  • Thank you so much for all of your help and advice!  This is all new to me so I appreciate your help! :)
