Thanksgiving Menu!

Is anyone cooking this Thanksgiving?  I'm looking for ideas for some new side dishes!

We are going to my aunt's this Saturday for our family dinner - I'll be making a side dish, but I'm not sure what yet.

On actual Thanksgiving, we're having both of our parents and brothers over.  Everyone contributes to the dinner, so we won't have a lot to cook, but I'd like to try some new sides in additional to our old faithfuls.

What's on your menu?

Re: Thanksgiving Menu!

  • I'm not cooking - but I have to help my mom more this year than usual since my dad is still laid up.  We're having:
    turkey
    stuffing
    mashed potatoes
    green bean casserole
    mac & cheese
    cranberries
    roasted sweet potatoes
    rolls
    pie

    All of the delicious usuals!

  • We are going to SIL, so not sure menu and not sure what I have to take. Meghan..... I've made this for our christmas dinner and everyone really likes:

It makes ALOT if you follow this. I leave out the water chestnuts. I make this for about 13-15 and have leftovers.

  • I make this too for a variation to mashed potatoes:

  • I'm not cooking but Logan and I go o my parents to watch the parade. I'm bringing this casserole: http://mrsschwartzkitchen.blogspot.com/2013/07/bubble-up-breakfast-bake.html?m=1

Im also bringing dessert for thanksgiving and I'm making this pumpkin spice latte bundt cake: http://www.mixandmatchmama.blogspot.com/2013/10/meal-planning-monday-6.html?m=1

My mom takes care of the rest.

  • It's just the 5 of us, and considering one is 11 months old and the 3yr old is picky, I'm thinking of a turkey breast, mashed turnips, roasted brussel sprouts or my candied carrots, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Any leftovers the next night will include mashed potatoes.

As we do more and more holidays by ourselves, I just don't give a hoot anymore about cooking or doing anything "special". It's sad and lonely, really!

However, the breakfast bake Sarah posted looks good and I might do that this year to eat while we watch the parade. Yum!

  • I'm hosting 20 this year, and I'm still trying to put my menu together.

for appetizers I'm having baked brie with candied pecans and spinach dip with beer bread.

I always do roasted brussels sprouts with pecans and a cranberries with orange zest.

This year I want to do a butternut squash side.

My aunt is making green beans.

I'll also make biscuits and possibly corn.

For dessert I have pumpkin cheesecake and banana gooey cake.

  • I forgot my stuffing. I make a cranberry apple stuffing for the turkey itself.

  • I am hosting again this year. I much prefer it that way to be honest. We are just having 10 (or 11, not sure if my grandpa is coming out) but there will be:
    Turkey
    Stuffing
    Gravy
    homemade crescent rolls
    MIL is bringing mashed potatoes
    Mum is making pies
    mulled cider
    corn
    roasted brussel sprouts
some cheese and crackers for snacks before
    wine, pumpking beer.
  • I finally settled on the menu, coordinated with my dad and MIL, and did the shopping this weekend. We're hosting 12 people. We've also been making the kids try more foods at dinner and that caused some last minute changes. (They might eat some turkey this year!)

    Turkey
    Gravy
    Mashed potatoes
    Corn
    Broccoli (recipe TBD)
    Homemade applesauce
    Pumpkin scones
    Wassail
    Pumpkin pie with whipped cream

    MIL
    Sweet potatoes
    Mac'n'cheese
    Stuffing
    Pop
Plus whatever else she decides to buy/make - probably deviled eggs, two more sides and several desserts.

I'm also going to have cheese & crackers for an appetizer/lunch. And I might make French toast to eat while we watch the parade (from the DVR!)

  • Our Menu (everyone brings something.  We will have 15 people at our house)

Appetizers:  Shrimp Cocktail, Hummus and Pita Chips, clean "Cookie Dough" and graham crackers, Caprese Skewers

    Dinner:
    Deep Fried McGinnis Sisters Turkey
Ruth's Chris Sweet Potato Casserole and Clean Baked Sweet Potatoes
    Garlic Mashed Potatoes
    Savory Sausage Stuffing/Dressing
    Clean Green Bean Casserole
    Homemade Orange Cranberry Relish
Jellied Cranberries from a can (it's been a running joke in our family...the goal is to get it out of the can so the little rings are still visible and it's still in the shape of a can)

    Desserts:
Pumpkin Roll, Clean "Cookie Dough" dip

We also have activities for the kids:  make a turkey hat, those scratch pumpkins, turkey plate and then after dinner it's the annual Gingerbread House decorating so each family of the 3 families with kids gets a house to decorate and take home

  • Just our little family again this year....

I picked up a 3-lb turkey breast to make, as DH didn't want the whole bird. I also bought JennieO turkey drumsticks to cook up.

    Mashed turnip
Baked potato (for anyone who wants it - may not make)
    Roasted brussel sprouts
Small dish of sweet carrots for Conall, my picky eater
    Stuffing
    Rolls

I'm also going to make a baked brie and bacon-wrapped chestnuts for snacking on. Dessert - I think DH might make an apple pie.

Some of my favorite memories from the holidays are my cousin and I sitting in our room (depending who was visiting) drawing and painting pictures, talking, listening to music and listening to the parents howling with laughter downstairs. We always found our own things to do.
