Follow up to Eleanor & Park being challenged in MN school district

If you remember, a few months ago, Rainbow Rowell was scheduled to come speak at schools and libraries in the district about Eleanor & Park, but a parent decided to challenge it due to profanity and adult themes. I'm happy to report that after reviewing the book, the school district has decided not to ban the book. The review committee was made up of parents, teachers, the superintendent, the librarian, and a student. They concluded:

“The group liked the book. They felt the writing was skillful. We talked a lot about the key themes in the book: bullying, poverty, abuse, love, body image and the power of language,” Farley said. “They felt the high school students would relate to the themes and be familiar with the language.

“We did acknowledge some of the language is rough, but it fits the situation and the characters,” he said. “If you did remove that, it wouldn’t be the same.”

Re: Follow up to Eleanor & Park being challenged in MN school district

  • I'm so relieved that they decided not to ban it.  I teach in a neighboring district, and the attention this book has gotten has made it very popular with our students.
  • That is good news! I hate hearing that books get banned because uptight parents feel the need to get all up in arms!
  • I haven't read this yet, but I did buy it for Kindle.

Book banning is the dumbest thing ever. Don't want your kid to read something? Don't let them. Or even read it with them and talk about those things. Something besides banning it from being read by an entire school's population of kids.

  • That's terrific! I recently read it and I will definitely share it with my kids when they are old enough. Thanks for the update.

I live in MN, too. I'm surprised that such a liberal state would do this ... but, I guess it only takes one, right?
