Random iPhone Question

I have an iPhone 5 with the least amount of memory.  I never thought I would be able to fill up the memory, but here I am with very little memory left, it won't back up to my cloud, and the software update won't download because I don't have enough space available. Does anyone else have the same issue?  I know it's my own fault.  I have way too many videos and songs, but I can't seem to take any of them off my phone.  I'm convinced that as soon as I take these things off of my phone, I'll need them for some reason.

Re: Random iPhone Question

  • I've heard good things about dropbox, but I've never used it.

J uses Google Drive to store his media. I back up my videos to Youtube and my photos to Shutterfly.  Then I just get rid of as many pictures as I comfortably can. I think you just need to pull off the band aid on deleting some pictures. :)

    I had to do a major clean-out to upgrade to iOS7.  I have a 4S, but I imagine it's the same scenario.

FTR, I don't get the Cloud and I don't use/trust it.  Plus I have more media than the 5G that it allows.  At least, I think it's 5G.

  • Yeah, I have the same problem with deleting things.  I'm still running iOS 6 because there's no way I could get enough room for 7.  Every day I'm going through my pictures and apps to see what I can delete because it won't let me take any more pictures because my memory is full.

You CAN back up your phone to the computer when you plug it in through iTunes.  That's what I do because it won't backup to the Cloud.

  • With my 4S, Every so often, I would dump my photos onto my macbook to open up space.
  • It may be more the songs than the pictures.  I have a 16gb and over 2k pictures but for music I use Spotify.

  • I used to have the same problem with my old 16g 4S.  I was deleting pictures and apps and everything all the time.  I would dump pics to the computer every couple of months to make space.

Hook up to the computer, take off pictures and videos, and rearrange your music.  I have something like 10,000 songs in my itunes library, but only a very small percentage of them on my phone at any given time.

Also, think about iTunes Match for your music (though maybe you can only do that with ios7, I'm not sure) - then all of your music is available to you whenever you have wifi.  It lives in the cloud and streams over wifi, taking up no space in your phone memory.  It's $25/year.  I know very little about it beyond this, so I'm sorry I can't be more help.
  • If you have any pictures, clean some of those up. Because the camera is so good, they take up a LOT of space.

This is my deal exactly. I have a 16G 4s and it won't fit the update. I keep deleting things but it never makes a difference! I have like 1.2G available. Darn HUGE children apps! I have to put this stuff on my pc so it can go on the iPad instead of my phone.

  • It's all about Dropbox! Those videos are killer. I love Dropbox, because I can still access the files from my phone very easily. iMatch is also a saving grace.

  • I have iTunes Match which makes a huge difference for me with music, I don't have to have a ton of files on my song and can just stream any of my music from my library whenever I want.  You can download songs to your phone to save your data.  The videos are the killer, I only keep a few on my phone at a time.

  • I haven't read the replies, but I had this problem too, and maybe I'm just dumb and you'll be like "uh, yeah, I do that..."

But I had never deleted a single text anyone sent me. They go off of the screen so I thought they were gone, but they stay on the phone unless you delete them. Before I deleted them, I could only save like 20 pictures. Right now I have over 1000 on my phone. There were texts on there from 2010. Whoops.

  • Jacki, I'm guilty of this too.  They pile up and pile up and then one day I just clear everything.
  • You'd be amazed at how much free space you get when you delete texts! I used to let them build up but they take up more room that you would think.

  • I don't understand how this works, but I also didn't have enough room on my phone for the update. Our IT guy at work told me to log into iTunes, run the update from there with my phone hooked up to the computer (as in, tell iTunes to update the phone). Said something about it taking things off the phone to have room for the update and then putting them back on? Anyway, it worked and all my stuff was still there.
