Amazon Drone Delivery

Did anyone else see this on 60 minutes yesterday?

I wonder if it'll actually happen someday.

Re: Amazon Drone Delivery

  • I didn't see the story but I noticed the internet buzz about it today.  I think it would be a pretty cool use of the drone type technology, but it really falls into that zone of uber-futuristic technology I just can't really wrap my mind around going into use.

Also, I already use my Prime shipping like crazy. If stuff showed up in 30 minutes... well it may progress to an unhealthy level.
  • That is cool and could really come in handy!! But I can't imagine the shipping cost for that would be affordable!

  • I saw an article on this yesterday, and thought it was a joke.  I think it would be cool, but I really can't wrap my head around it.  I think it would be convenient, but I also think it could go terribly wrong.  Also, I can't imagine how expensive it would be!
  • I watched the segment last night and I admire the CEO's vision. However, I think he's being ultra aggressive saying it could happen as early as 2015. I mean, all of the FAA regulations they need to meet / agree upon, whatever, won't even happen until the end of next year it they are lucky.

I'm guessing a 2015 rollout would be within a 10m radius of their warehouses, to begin with. And packages couldn;t weigh more than 5lbs.

Can you imagine the logisitcs of this though? As Amanda said, the cost of it would have to be somewhat substantial to cover the insurance the company would have to have in case of a malfunction (Oh we're sorry kid - we didn't mean for Mrs. Smith's ultra-imperative diaper order to fall on your head as you walked to school.)

Then there is the whole mentality of "we have to have it now". I think this is just going to continue to foster greed and make people more demanding overall.

Plus side - maybe it will cause some change to happen at the post office. I'm ticked that an order I placed with Cheryl's cookies two weeks ago is only going to be delivered today. TWO weeks bc it's USPS delivery. I'm thinking I should mail out my Chsitmas gifts this week in order to (hopefully) get them there by Christmas!
