Resolution

I've been thinking about what I should do for my New Year's resolution.  Of course there's the typical "eat better and exercise" one, but that should be something I do regardless.  I feel like a resolution should be something that challenges you and gives you new experiences, unlike things that you are used to doing.  For me, I think I am going to try to be more adventurous.  Get out and try new restaurants (because I'm a super picky eater), maybe go zip lining (because I'm afraid of heights and going fast), train for and run a 5K (because I've never been a super athletic person).  Maybe I'll come up with certain things to do every month for the next year or goals to hit by X amount of months.  I'm thinking this will be fun!

So, have you ladies thought of anything for your New Years resolution?  Do you even make a resolution each year?

Re: Resolution

  • I LOVE this idea.  Maybe we could make it a monthly challenge on this board.  Example: January: Try a food that you never have, July: Do something that scares you (Zip lining, sky diving, rock climbing.)  They could even be as simple as Go to a wine tasing, or take a weekend getaway with DH.  What do you think of that?  I think it would be a ton of fun and then we can all do it together!

Or we could do it by season and you get X amount of points for each thing you do.  (Like NBC does with their book challenges.)  We could check in on each other weekly and see how everyone else is doing.  Thoughts?

  • So far, all I know is I'd like to get down to X pounds by my birthday at the end of March. I'm sure I'll think of something else. I like the idea of doing monthly check-ins with either yourself or here on the boards, though.

It reminds me of The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, which I recommend if you haven't read it. I'm kind of a crank I guess because a lot of it annoyed me, but it gets the wheels turning and she divides it up by months in a neat way.

  • I love that idea @Seipel12!!

    • My resolutions are to: Help DH find a new job with a better quality of life (I'd like to see him before 9:30 pm and working Saturdays is for the birds.)
    • I am launching a new blog in January.  I have a beauty blog now, and I am transferring some of that over but also tincluding stuff like recipes, home decor, photograpy/art, DIY/crafts, etc.  It will be like a lifestyle blog--I'd love for this to turn into a part-time job type income.  I make around 1 penny per day from my makeup blog...lol.  I think of myself as like 70% Martha Stewart and %30 sloppy hobo, so it won't be one of those blogs where everything is always perfect and braggy.   Like I will post a new craft or recipe and then maybe note how I have 6 loads of laundry lying on the floor, haha :)
    • More prayer.
    • Living more fearlessly!

  • I love this idea! I have no idea on the new year resolution. I'd like to do something with H to get us closer. I feel like, especially in the winter, we get in a runt. I think we both have some seasonal depression, so something fun to look forward to would be awesome.

@lehc723 - added book to my wish list! Sounds interesting!

  • Yes! Post your blog website! I'm a huge blog reader/bloglovin' user!

I'd love to start a blog of my own. I had a Tumblr account for awhile, but I think I only posted on it a few times. I put a lot of thought into those posts, but then felt like no one was reading them. I know I should have given it more time, but I felt like I was putting a lot of time into something that no one read.

  • Well right now it just has the framework but when I get the Wordpress stuff configured I will put it up :)  Excited for you to see it!!!

    @Seipel12 - that's a great idea!

So, should we maybe start listing ideas and timeline?  Maybe we can make a sticky about it @Cathyl7910?

    Sticky made.
    my read shelf:
Cathy (CathyL7910)'s book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Do we want to do one challenge per month, or like a list of challenges with point values every 3 months jan-mar, apr-jun, july-sept and oct-dec?

Example of the quarterly challenges (for those of you that have never seen NBCs challenges)

Have dinner with an old friend - 5pts

    Weekend getaway - 10pts

    Bungee Jumping - 25pts

  • I always break my resolution by January 10th.  I agree with @ystaalenburg, resolutions should be more to improve the person you are.  I would totally be in for challenges, whether monthly or quarterly.

Maybe we can do both.  Have smaller things monthly and bigger goals quarterly.

Month example - dinner with an old friend
Month example - try a food you don't like that you haven't tried in more than a year

Quarterly example - do something adventurous (bungee jump, zip line, free fall)
Quarterly example - have a weekend with H only, either away from home or staycay.

The month to month ones can have a smaller point value and the quarterly ones can have a larger point value.

  • Try something on your pinterest board. We could make one month a craft and another a food item. Or just difficulty level (something simple and something out of your comfort zone).

  • Wear an item of clothing that you normally wouldn't---like something you think "oh I can't pull that off"...even if it's just a shade of lipstick or something.

Watch one classic movie you haven't seen (I'm embarrassed to admit I've never seen Casablanca!!)

  • Learn a new skill, take a class, would that count under #7?

  • I can safely say I already got one of those down: #1. I attempted making meatloaf for the first time last night. (I should also add that normally DH is the designated chef of the family) It failed miserably, but it at least smelled delicious while cooking.

I made Teriyaki sauce from scratch yesterday for the first time.  It was good, but a little too sweet.

Yeah, I think this would fall under #7.

So every beginning of the month, I'll post a new thread for that months challenge.  If that month is also the beginning of the quarter, then I will also post the quarterly challenge.  We can all check in on that as the month goes by.
