Is it OK to reach out?

I work for a nonprofit/public service type organization.  My organization is majorly downsizing (basically laying off about 60% of staff.)  Rather than laying specific people off, our organization is asking all staff to reapply for positions.  They also are offering an "out" for people to leave on positive terms and receive a small severance package for anyone who does not want to reapply for their position.

I do not want to stay, and want to use this as a natural opportunity to pursue other things, within the same field.  We have a board member who is extremely well connected and well known in our field.  I have done a little bit of with this board member, and have received very positive feedback from him.  He has said, "If you ever need ANYTHING, do not hesitate for one second to reach out to me."  I am thinking of emailing him to ask if he knows of any positions open in our field or if he can connect me with any organizations/leaders.  Is this appropriate?  My only concern is if it's a conflict of interest since he will remain on the board throughout the changes our organization is facing.  Thoughts?  TIA.
