Messy kitty litter area (box recommendations?)

I have a 4-year-old Persian mix who I adore. I don't, however, adore the huge mess he makes around his litter box. I clean it daily, or every-other-day at the most. But he still manages to make a huge mess. He seems to be kicking a ton of litter out, so I am constantly sweeping. Lately I've been finding his poop just outside of the litter box too. I don't know if he's pooping outside of the box, or if he has been kicking it out. But I am getting frustrated! Any recommendations for the mess? Do you have a litter box that you love that keeps the area cleaner?

Re: Messy kitty litter area (box recommendations?)

  • Do you use a box with a lid? My cats are major litter flingers, and I find a lid really helps contain things!! I also place a little litter-catching mat at the open end of the box where the cats enter/exit, since trailing litter upon exit of the box is pretty much unavoidable.

Getting a box with very high sides can help, too, but some cats don't care to have to climb into a very tall box (think plastic storage bin; this is what my dad uses for his Ragdolls) and might just end up doing their business elsewhere out of sheer laziness, so proceed with caution!

  • I don't have a lid, it just has higher sides (except for the entrance). He seems to fling all the litter and sometimes poop from the entrance. And then of course there is the trail from walking out. He has a mat, but he still seems to get it everywhere! Maybe I will have to try something with a lid.
  • We have a covered litter box with a swinging door.  My cat will fling litter everywhere, all day, everyday.  I'm convinced she knows how much it irritates me and does it to cause trouble.  Or, she knows how much the dogs like to chow down on it and makes sure she gets enough out for them to munch.  The covered box doesn't stop it completely but at least makes it manageable.

I bought ours at Target for $15 or so?

  • I have a domed box that has steps on the inside and another box that looks like a Rubbermaid container with a hole in the lid and they are both great. I personally would keep the litter for a long haired cat shallow.

  • We use the omega paw self cleaning litter box. It's amazing. Not only does it keep litter inside (its a covered box) but you also don't have to scoo litter anymore. You just roll the box over and it sifts and separates then dumps it in a basket you take out and dump. It's only thirty five bucks on amazon. I highly recommend it.
