Need a name!

We have recently decided to get a puppy! Any unique names out there? Boy or girl...doesn't matter since we haven't decided on that yet.

Re: Need a name!

  • What are your interests? What breed/mix of dog are you planning on looking for? FWIW, our dog is a boy GSP/Coonhound mix and his name is Scout. I love to read (I'm sneaking over from the NBC Board) and To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book. The main character's name is Scout. She's a girl, but whatevs.

  • I would wait until you meet your pup and get to know his/her personality. Our dog was going to be Troy and ended up being Boomer, which is a much better name for him!

  • You could play around with some names you might like but you won't really know it until you see your puppy.  I have an italian mastiff named Ben.

Do you like human names for animals or do you like more traditional animal type names?

We were going to name our Boxer pup Layla, but when we brought her home, it didn't suit her at all. We ended up calling her Zoey after almost a week of figuring out what might fit her.

PS: I hope you've either found a highly reputable breeder or will be adopting your pup from a rescue. So many deserving dogs out there!

  • Lucy, Margaret, Penny, Bernard, Harvey, Ernesto lol
  • We just got a black lab puppy and named her Toothless after the movie how to train your dragon.  Pick a name that will make you happy when you think about it, like a favorite movie or memory.  It helps when you have your puppy.  Good luck

My female beagle is named Scout! To Kill a Mockingbird is also one of my favourite books, so I was surprised by all the feedback when I told people my sweet girl's name. They all looked me and said "that's a boy's name." Personally, I think it works for either a male or female pup. My male beagle is named Bandit.
