Fix my kitchen layout.

We are planning a kitchen reno on our horrid kitchen this spring.  I am pretty convinced we may currently have the ugliest kitchen.  Our goals are to make it more enjoyable for us but also make it sellable without putting money into it that we would never get back.  Because of that, we do not intend on moving walls or appliances at this point, rather the biggest change will be the addition of more cabinets.  It is a really small space and I have been playing with IKEA's room planner to get a feel for what our options are.  I have attached a photo of a possible layout.  The wall labeled A is not very changeable.  It will have our range/oven, sink, dishwasher and whatever cabinets we can squish in.  Our fridge is not actually displayed here but is in a little nook that is in wall "C."

There are currently no cabinets between walls B and that joining to D.  We have a terribly placed L-shaped breakfast bar that we hate.  Trying to decide if the space is big enough to put in standard depth base cabinets on both sides with a corner unit.  It would give us the most storage but I don't want the flow to be super awkward if I can prevent that.   Also, by eliminating the breakfast bar, we are getting rid of our eat in capacity.  I am hoping this won't be a big deal.  Our casual dining room is just off of wall B.  We thought about blowing that wall out and putting in a half wall with seating but I think that would be too much.

Thoughts?

(The door on B is an open space that goes to the dining room, the door on C goes to a powder room, the door on A leads to the backyard and the extreme right wall is actually bifold doors that cover the W/D.)

Re: Fix my kitchen layout.

  • What is that door or window to the right of items 2 or 7 at the top? Can you remove it?

Also, have you considered adding cabinetry built-arounds over the doors to the powder room and/or backyard? Like a full bank of cabinets utilizing your vertical space?

Also, I know you said you are not moving walls, but a question I have is, what room is outside the kitchen where walls C and D meet? What if you made that 90 degree angled wall into a diagonal (chop off the corner) and then you could do a small eat-in there.

  • That is the door to the basement.  The only way in so I can't block it.  The descending wall actually doubles as pantry space for me now.

Where C and D meet, used to be the garage.  The previous owners created an open closet where the fridge sits, then to the right, a powder room.  Then directly behind those on the other side is a small living room.  Wall D is a cement block wall that probably bears weight so messing with it could be difficult.

The build arounds are a good idea.  That laundry corner is just weird but I bet I could redo that space with some build arounds incorporating the back door.....I hate the bifolds covering the W/D.
