Training with Electric Collar?

Hello all-

We have two dogs, a 2yo Doberman mix and 5mo Great Pyrenees/heeler mix. We are having an issue with the older dog running off to chase deer, squirrels or just running off to run.  When this happens, we're at my in-laws who have a 4 acre yard surrounded by farmland and some woods.  There is plenty of room for her to run in the yard and get her exercise and playtime with the other dogs.  We are worried that she is going to get shot by a hunter that gets mad she's chasing the deer (this has happened in the area several times) or get hit by a car.  We absolutely adore our dogs and definitely don't want to hurt them and be cruel about it, but we need to figure out a way to train them to stay in the yard or at the very least come back immediately when we call rather than ignoring us.

Any advice or thoughts on electric collars?

Re: Training with Electric Collar?

  • are you referring to an electric fence or just a collar that you would use to train with?

We have an electric fence and we love it.  It gives my guy free roam of the entire yard.  Our yard is too awkward to fence in and we dont really use fences up in my area. It was very easy to train him on with the flags and the collar, he learned quickly and knows he can only leave the yard on a leash.

  • Do you mean a collar that you press a button and it shocks the dog?  No, that is just cruel IMO.  What if they released a model to be used on children to teach them right from wrong, what would people think?  That is was cruel and abusive.  Try a vibrating collar.  It vibrates and the dog doesn't like it, but it does not hurt him/her at all, it just feels like a phone on vibrate or something.

  • How about a long leash? She can run, doesn't get a cruel shock for acting like a dog.
  • Work on training your dogs with verbal recall commands. And don't let them run around outside unsupervised.

If your dog has a high prey drive to go after animals she sees in the woods, it's just in everyone's best interest not to allow her out there off a leash or long lead. Might not be convenient for you, but it's safer for her.
