Chipped Fireplace, UGH!

I used some hooks to hold up our stockings that were supposed to be wall friendly, I've had them do this to our wall once before but was REALLY hoping they wouldn't do it to the fireplace.  I'm guessing it's a veneer finish (that's what DH said, honestly I don't really know much about this type of thing).  I bought 2 things from walmart, one was a touchup marker but was much too dark and would have made it worse, and DH tried some blend sticks which were also less than helpful.

Am I doomed to have it look like this forever?  It's really kind of driving me crazy.  No way we are getting a new fireplace, as this one was pretty expensive and we only use it as emergency heat.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

  • I've needed to do touchups before and got a 3-pak of different colored furniture markers. Even though our furniture is all either cherry or darker, the lightest colored marker worked the best, I just had to use multiple applications.
