Brown rut

I cannot seem to get out of the dark brown wood rut. Actually my entire house is nothing but dark brown or dark red. How can I get out of this gloominess? I want everything to look put together but I want color and more lightness...while still looking like everything flows

Re: Brown rut

  • You can add in variations of white throughout. You can also opt for lighter brown tones throughout. If you want to add a non-neutral, you could add in greens or blues. Both colors can look good with red.

What color is the wood trim around your doors, windows, etc? All of our furniture is either dark cherry or a brownish black. I personally think it is balanced out because all the wood trim in the house is white and we have honey-oak colored cabinets. Though i guess most would say our cabinets are "dated" i think the different wood tone is good since all of our furniture is dark. Cabinets are tough to change but you could paint the trim. Also, if you have dark floors you could consider getting white or cream/beige area rugs to lighten up the room as well as give a good contrast against your darker colored furniture.
  • Mine too!  I plan to add color through accessories (pictures, pillows, etc.) and painting a few rooms.
  • We have dark wood throughout our entire downstairs, and I love it! I don't think it looks gloomy at all, and is a nice contrast to our light carpet, walls, and curtains.

You don't mention what other colors are dominant in your house.  If they are dark, perhaps you could go lighter to ease up that 'gloomy' feeling,
