Recommend travel location.

DH and I were going to go to Cancun with friends the first week of April but it fell through. Now, the best time for us to travel is the 3rd week in May. We've been to Italy. I'd like to go some place new. Cancun is not really our first choice because DH is very fair. We are thinking maybe Amsterdam but temps at that time are 50-65 degrees and it can rain a lot. Australia would be amazing, but pricey.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just trying to get more ideas.

Re: Recommend travel location.

  • What do you like to do?  Amsterdam is beautiful. I believe that in May is when the tulip fields are blooming. BEAUTIFUL.
  • We like everything that's the problem! We like guided tours, walking old towns on our own, relaxing on a beach (this one gets old fast though)

If I had to pick my favorite thing about our Italy trip, it was sitting at an outdoor bar and talking with locals while we watches street performers come and go. We were in Florence for May Day.

I'm really leaning towards the Netherlands. DH is Dutch. He's second generation. I think we can have a good time in Amsterdam for a few days then maybe stay in a smaller town in the north.

I would like sunbathing in St Lucia or something but I'm trying to plan the best for the both of us.

  • I was in Amsterdam a few years ago the 3rd week in April and it the weather was beautiful. It didn't rain at all (although this was probably just by chance) and the temperatures were in the 60's. Perfect for a light jacket in the shade or a T-shirt in the sun. Tulips were also in full bloom! I'd highly recommend it. Based on what you've enjoyed about past trips I think you'd love it. There are so many sidewalk bars and cafes, places for picnics, and of course lots of interesting art/culture/history as well!
  • There are many little towns that you could visit! I highly recommend The Netherlands.

I'm very fair too, but I just use lots of sunscreen.  I certainly don't avoid sunny locations because of it!

That said, what's your budget?  Must you go in May?  If you wait a little longer, you can go to Europe and have the best of both worlds.....sightseeing and beach.  I love Costa del Sol.  You can stay on the beach and walk up and down the promenade....there's tons of shops and restaurants.  We also did day trips to Seville, Granada, Gibraltar and even Morocco!

    Turkey.

Istanbul has some amazing history, and it's easy to walk around Sultanhamet on your own. The natural scenery in Cappadocia is stunning, and there are lots of opportunities there to do guided tours of the surrounding region. Then head down to Antalya for a few days at an inexpensive AI on the beach, because May is the beginning of their summer season. Or do a Blue Cruise out of Bodrum to lounge on the boat while admiring the scenic coast.

Plus the people are friendly and the food is incredible.

Thank you everyone! We are going to Amsterdam in May. I am very excited. PP to answer your question our budget is $4500-5500 so we will be able to be there for 5 days. We can only travel in the months January to May because DH is a farmer and we are both avid hunters in November and like to be home for the hollidays.

Turkey is not something that I had researched or considered. It's added to my list now! Thank you.

They were booked. Looked amazing though. Looking at Amsterdam American Hotel I think. I love how old it is. I was told to wait until 8 weeks out for the best deals. Truth?
