Processed Foods

So, my family avoids frozen meals or boxed dinners and "fake meats." I buy stuff without high fructose corn syrup and we ate a lot of fresh foods, not necessarily organic foods, though.

What else falls into the processed foods category? Are there things in this category that I am not aware of? Like, lurkers...things I think are healthy but really aren't?

Let me know. I want to revamp our grocery buying in 2014. Thanks.

Re: Processed Foods

  • We like to eat whole foods as well and try to avoid anything processed or with weird additives. Off the top of my head here are a few things you might want to look out for:

-granola bars, pre-made trail mixes and other "healthy snacks"

-If you guys drink juice, try to go for the ones that are refrigerated, not the ones found in the juice aisle. Even then you'll want to check out the ingredients.

-Yogurt, oddly enough. I've found some yogurts (and sour cream, coffee creamer, etc) that have some very questionable ingredients.

It's been a long couple of days and my brain is fried so that's all I can think of for now, but if anything else comes to mind I'll let you know.

you might want to check out. http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/ It's awesome and gives some great ideas and inspiration. We're vegetarian and the blog is not, but even so I find the blog really helpful.

  • Good nutrition is about fueling our bodies with the foods and beverages they need in order to do their best at the functions they're designed to perform. It's about eating "real food"—not processed food products. Good nutrition is not about eating a lot or a little but about the quality of the food.
  • You mention high fructose corn syrup but do you also cut out corn syrup? Or corn syrup solids?

I try to buy things with as few ingredients as possible and where I know/ can identify what is in the ingredient label.

If you go out to eat do you ask questions about what's in the food? I need to for health reasons.
  • A processed food addiction starts because you feel good when you are eating these foods and they make you think they taste better. You crave that pleasurable feeling and this is what starts a food addiction.
