Weekend trip to NYC

My husband is going to Syracuse for business at the end of January and suggested that I fly out on Friday to meet him in NYC and spend the weekend there and then we both come home on Sunday (we live in MN).

I have never been to NYC and have always wanted to, but I am afraid that we won't really be able to do a lot or see much in only one weekend. It won't even be an entire 48 hours because he can't get to NYC til Friday evening and then we would need to catch a Sunday afternoon flight home to get back to kids.

Can you do NYC in less than 48 hours without feeling like it was too rushed? Is it worth it?

Re: Weekend trip to NYC

  • I haven't been to NY NY since I was 3. I really want to go though and am curious what others recamened.

I have been to other cities for the amount of time you describe or less. I find it fun and more relaxing if I prioritize what I want to see/ do. And if I ever go again I can do the same things or something completely different.
  • You can't see much in 2 days. It seems like an expensive/long flight for such a short trip. If NYC is your absolute dream destination, then meh, it's your call!

I love NYC. I love going to musicals, the Metropolitan Opera, Central Park, the ballet, the museums, shopping in little clothing stores off the beaten track, and of course, eating!
  • Why do you have to do a lot? Why can't you just enjoy 2 days worth of shopping, broadway shows, great restaurants and just walking the streets of the greatest city in the world!?!? Don't worry about coming here and not doing everything that you think you should on a visit. Just do what your time allows, take time to saunter and enjoy your visit and don't rush around.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • My husband and I did something similar a few years ago in January. We were with his family in PA and went into the city for one night (2 full days). While we didn't do the Statue of Liberty or Ground Zero, we saw pretty much everything else... Empire State Building, St. Patricks Cathedral, Central Park, shopping district, FAO toy store, Rockefeller Center and the UN. Along the way we enjoyed lots of amazing food!. We were busy, but it was a great time.
I'd say go for it. If you feel like you don't do it all, you can always go back :)
Just be warned, it is COLD and WINDY! I'm from Colorado and thought I could take it, but plan to take cabs/public trans for longer distances because walking can be downright miserable!
