Someone stole the gift card we were sending to my Granny in Mississippi right out of her Christmas card.  And it had to be a postal employee because the cards were dropped at the post office this Christmas.  I am so upset right now.  The damaged envelope came back today in one of those "We're Sorry!" envelopes.  Sorry my ass! 

2014 is being a real bitch so far.  I was sick all day yesterday, and now today there's this.

Aww, @fabk, you're so sweet to ask!  I was, but when we were coming back from seeing my SMIL and DH's sister and BIL in Lynchburg I was starting to feel puny and now I have a low grade fever.  Joy.

Isn't their first class mail insured up to a certain dollar amount? Or is that just packages? If you file a report they may reimburse you the amount of the GC

Yeah, report that. They're really serious about this. Stealing mail is a federal crime and they have postal inspectors whose entire job is to investigate these kind of things. My parents work at the post office and a couple of months ago, a guy was sent to federal prison for stealing netflix movies. They don't mess around. 

If the gift card wasn't used, the store may reissue a gift card.

I've reported it to them via their website, but I haven't heard anything yet (but that was just yesterday).  Unfortunately DH purged our December receipts and that was one of them, so we can't find the activation info on it.   

I'm also trying to figure out the best way to replace it for my Granny.  She doesn't have internet and now I'm concerned about sending stuff in the mail to her that isn't a package.  I really wanted her to have the money because she needs it!
