Valentine's Day; gifts for hubbies, fiances, BFs, and SOs...

Yes, yes, we are barely into January but already V-Day decorations are popping up in stores (I even saw them being put up before the New Year!) and it got me thinking...what am I going to get my fiance? Is anyone else already starting to peruse Pinterest for gift/goodie ideas or is it still too soon? If you have started looking, what have you found? What are you planning for V-day or is it just still too early for all of this? :)

Re: Valentine's Day; gifts for hubbies, fiances, BFs, and SOs...

  • We aren't into material stuff, so we try to find a special dinner to attend around V Day.
  • Usually if we do decide to do something for V Day, it may be either going out for dinner or making something fancy.
We try not to go overboard since we both have February birthdays as well.

  • I try to pay attention all year to little things he says and get ideas from that to buy his gifts for upcoming holidays/gift giving days.  For Valentine's Day I already have a movie for him that he really likes and I am thinking of getting him a t-shirt of his favourite band that he was admiring but was a little pricey for "just a t-shirt".

  • Last year I got H a couple of cards. A cute one and a sentimental one. Also bought him his favorite Disney movie (lady and the tramp).

This year I'll get him a card or two and another movie (Warm Bodies).
  • We usually go to dinner and I will probably try to get him something that I wanted to get him for Christmas but couldn't. I also pay attention to little things he might mention wanting or pay attention to what his current hobbies are.
  • The year before my husband and I got married I ordered him a hand stamped penny keychain from Etsy.  I customized the quote on the base of metal and had a penny from specific years added to the chain.  One penny from the year we were born, one for the year we met, and another for the year we adopted our puppy.  He added it to his car keys so he got to appreciate it regularly.  On our wedding day I gave him one with a pre-made whole from that year so he could add to it.  I plan on adding ones from each year our kids are born.

For $15 that was equally frugal and thoughtful.  Of course if his keys weigh more then your purse this might not be a good concept.
  • In our house, we just spend valentines day together and don't really buy each other anything.  Try being a tourist in your town one day.  Go to the park or another attraction. Your city's website or TripAdvisor might be a good place to start.
  • i'm buying my guy a gps, its super thoughtful and practical!
  • We don't really buy gifts. Maybe something trinket-y and a card. We may take a trip out of town for the weekend to have a nice dinner, but that's about the extent of it. I'd actually be perfectly happy ignoring it, but DH is more of a romantic than I am, and he likes acknowledging a day meant to show someone how much you love them, so I'll play along.

This reminds me DH and I should talk about if we're gifting this year, some years we do some years we don't.  A few years ago I got him tickets to a red sox game (he wanted them for Christmas, but they don't go on sale until after Christmas).

I'm definitely a fan of the DIY V-day...cook a nice meal together, pick up some flowers for the table, light some candles, and just stay in :) post-dinner couch cuddling in fuzzy pjs :)

  • I'm married to a man's man who absolutely loves beef jerky and doesn't like sweets very much at all, so this year I'm getting him a huge gift bag full of various beef jerky's to take with him to work. :) We usually don't do big things for Valentine's Day- just cards and small gifts- but we like to make time for a double date with our friends. Last year, the women surprised the men with a date, and this year it's up to the men- it'll be interesting to see what they come up with! :)
  • I hate (HATE) going out to eat on Vday. It is the single most annoying thing to me.

My Vday tradition with my ex was frozen fish sticks. Not sure what the plans are with Fi. Likely something low-key though.
  • I already found and gave my husband his gift, lol, I was too excited. I found this beautiful blown glass otter. He loves otters and otters are so hard to find. It's sitting on our mantel right now. He loved it.

We don't spend much on gifts at all, normally under $20. He's gotten me flowers a couple of times, but for the most part, we just have "date" night, but make it fancy by having steaks.
  • Our cat is getting spayed the day before Valentine's Day (and she's getting over being sick too, poor baby), so we'll likely be spending that evening making sure she continues to heal well. Not sure what our dinner plans are for this year, but they'll probably be at home.

I'm thinking that I'll get up and make him red velvet pancakes for breakfast before he has to go to work (I'm off but he isn't). I've already picked out and written his valentine.
