What to wear?

I'm invited to a surprise birthday party for one of my supervisors at work.  The party is Saturday night at 5:30 at the guy's home.  The invite has no indication regarding appropriate dress and I don't know his wife/party hostess, so I don't feel comfortable calling to ask.

We generally dress in suits at work or dressy business casual, but I have no clue what to wear.  Only one other person from work is invited to the party and she is equally confused about what to wear.

TIA!

I would probably go for something you could wear to a restaurant. Not overly dressy, but like 'dinner with the girls' type of dressy attire. Either a knee length type of dress with some accessories, or a nice pair of dark jeans or dress pants, paired with a nice blouse, and necklace/earrings. That way you're not overdressed, and don't run the risk of being underdressed either.

Don't forget to bring a gift for the hostess as well! A bottle of wine, or something! Always a good decision!

  • I'd go with a somewhat conservative LBD with fun jewelry. I got this one a few months ago and I wear it to tons of events and have never felt over or under dressed.
