I got a sewing machine for Christmas...
I have never touched a sewing machine in my life. I have been playing around with it for a couple of days and I think I'm ready to make something simple. Does anybody have any suggestions for a good beginner project? Or any general tips or advice?
Ultimately, I would like to make a duvet cover for dd when she gets her big girl bed (a twin bed). But, I'd like to play around a little bit before I jump into something like that.
Re: I got a sewing machine for Christmas...
I took a beginner's class at Cut and Sew Studio (I loved it) to get to relearn how to sew since it had been years from the last time I'd used a machine. We made and pillow. It was definitely a good way to get back into sewing.
I'm attempting my first clothing project now. A flouncy running skirt. I'm scared about it. I've never made anything that had to fit before.
I got one last Christmas! I took a beginner's sewing class at JoAnn's - it was super basic, but it was helpful and gave me the confidence to try things on my own.
The first thing I made was a super hero cape for the boys, which I thought was basic enough as a first timer. Other beginning projects were a crayon roll and a tissue holder, which were good for practicing to sew in straight lines. I also practiced different stitches/techniques on fabric scraps.
Most of my ideas and sewing tutorials came from Pinterest, so that might be a good place to start.
Have fun!
Lisa - this is the pattern that I used:

I bought my fabric at JoAnn's. Since it's a reversible cape, I bought solid color for one side (I sewed their initial on that side) and super hero for the other side. (Avengers for Mason and Spider-Man for Garrett.) It was basic cotton fabric.
