What are your splurges? What are your saves?

Re: What are your splurges? What are your saves?

  • Thought of one more splurge:
Photographs. I am getting monthly photos of my son taken every month until he is a year. Sometimes we go cheap (JCP groupon or mini-session with a photographer I've found on facebook) but sometimes it's expensive (buying the JCP CD or a more known photographer in our area). But this is something that I"m not ever going to cut from our budget. We will probably do this for every kid because they grow so dang quick. And I'm not always very good about getting my own camera out, so therefore I know at least that I'm getting monthly photos.

^^ I agree, completely worth the splurge!  I have a few new-parent friends who have splurged on a high-end blender or fancy camera before having kids.  Those kinds of things make all sorts of sense to me!
A fancier camera is definitely on my sometime in the future list. We bought a cheapie several years ago, and although its nice, it doesn't have enough settings to catch him when he's moving very fast.

    Splurges:
    1) Makeup - brand names I feel look better on me. I've tried less expensive but they just don't look as good (cream foundation especially)
    2) Restaurants - we hardly do fast food unless we're in a hurry. We don't mind spending $120 on just the 2 of us for dinner, Brazilian steak houses mostly.

    Saves:
    1) Nails - I buy the Kiss nail strips that have designs for both hands and feet, the toes last 2-3 weeks and the hands 1 week, I get them for $1.50 a set at Dollar General. It's been almost a year since I've gone to a nail salon. I get so many compliments on the strips, I recommend them.
    2) Holiday decor - we go to garage sales on Saturday mornings, our Christmas decorations (lights, outdoor inflatables, decor) were all from garage sales, spent maybe $20 total and our whole house (exterior) was lit up, saved a lot on that.
    3) Clothes - I like consignment stores, they have name brands at good prices.
    4) Shoes for me - I like Payless brand, even the heels I get from there seem to last. Target has long lasting and cute shoes too.
    5) Cell phones - we have the T Mobile Samsung Behold phone, no data plan and we like the phone, we have the Ipad and laptops and I'm always on computer at work so I don't want more internet in my life. No data plan works great for us.
  • Splurges:

    Makeup and perfume.
    Hand bags and shoes.
    Nails.

    Saves:

Clothes. I buy a lot of my clothes from Target and Old Navy. And always try to buy when things are on sale.

Food. We don't go out often, and when we do, we don't go out to fancy restaurant.
  • Splurges:
Gym (Crossfit - worth every penny)
Food - we eat out often and hardly ever eat fast food.  even groceries, we eat lots of meat, so this can get pretty high.  thank goodness for costco. :)
Cell phones - iPhones, and we upgrade pretty much every new release

    Saves:
Clothes - I don't remember the last time I payed full price on an item of clothing, usually at Loft, BR, Gap, Old Navy outlets
Hair, makeup, nail - stopped getting manis and pedis, i just do my own nails at home with borrowed nail polish. get my hair cut just twice a year and wear make up once in a blue moon.

  • Splurge:

Purses - so far 1 Prada and 2 LVs.
Restaurants - the Fi got me into the uber high end. It's more his vice than mine (but I'm happy to oblige!).
Lunch: due to the above, we rarely have groceries in the house, so I eat out most every day at work. We do have some more inexpensive options (a deli with awesome macaroni salad versus a full sit down restaurant) that I should utilize more often though.

    Save:

Pilates - canceled my membership and am using free YouTube videos: I love them!
Shopping - while a usual splurge, I'm determined to have all my clothes/accessory shopping be only wedding related until the wedding!
Cell phone - Fi's office gives him a cell phone stipend, so we've added me to his plan and we're still $20 under (which means we both get our monthly bills paid for through his company!).
CC points - I put all my day-to-day spending on my AmEx (paid in full monthly) and I bought ALL my Xmas presents this year via their points mall, so I spent nothing out of pocket (and bought a Tiffany's gift card as well as a $200 gift card to Morton's!).

Yes, LOVE the CC points!  As long as you're diligent about paying in full monthly, rewards cards are the bomb!  We have earned several restaurant and hotel gift cards that help fund our vacations.  H is an avid hunter and collects points on Cabelas and almost always gets whatever new gear he needs for free every year at hunting season.  I am a CC point junkie :)
