advice on a crib

Hello,no I am not pregnant yet,but I need some advice on this crib situation. My mother still has my old crib. She is going to give it to me for when we have kids.I know that I would like to sand it down and re-paint with a water based paint(I researched and saw these were the safest). Also, possibly getting some plastic guards put on the rails,so an infant wouldnt be able to chew on the wood.I hear alot of other mother's concerns of safety. This crib hasnt been used in almost 30 years, what safety issues should I be concerned with? Is there a certain list I can go by? Also,I know some people may think I am putting the horse before the wagon here(trying to do crib before I am pregnant)but in all honesty,I would like to have it done by the time I am pregnant, that way I will not have to worry about it! =)
