Cell phone plan

Does anyone have Straight Talk or have opinions on it? Trying to save $$ by switching our plan.

TIA!

Re: Cell phone plan

  • I don't have straight talk, but I do have pageplus, which is similar.  It's just fine as long as you don't need customer service - then it sort of falls to pieces.  But for the price ($30/month) I can't really complain.

My new job apparently gives us a hefty cell phone stipend... so I might be upgrading to something with a legit plan to get 4G.  But if I wasn't getting a stipend, I would totally stick with pageplus.  95% of the time it works great.  That remaining 5% is an annoyance, but it's not like I'm paying for outstanding customer service.

I've heard very similar things about Straight Talk.

  • From what one of the guys in my office was saying, it also doesn't support roaming.  May or may not be an issue to you, but one to check into if it does.

  • I don't have Straight Talk but I've had Republic Wireless for a few months now and have mostly good things to say about it. You have to have regular access to pretty good wi-fi, and you'll also need decent Sprint coverage when you aren't on wi-fi. But if you can meet those two criteria than it can be a pretty cheap option. You can get unlimited everything with 3G for $25 per month. With 4G I think it's $40 per month.
  • I have Straight Talk and I absolutely love it!  For $45 a month, you get unlimited everything!  I have not had an issue with them and have had them since last May.
  • It all depends on the math. I have two lines on Verizon for $150. I like having a good phone because I am in school and internshiping for my career so it is important to me to have constant email access and reliable, fast internet. I currently have the Samsung S4.
For my DH and I to go to Straight Talk we would need to buy new phones. The best phone they offer is the iPhone 5 for $549. Thats $1098 for two. Break that down into the cost to own it each month for two years (similar to a contract) and that comes to $24.75 each per month. Add that to the cost for the plan per month ($49.81 in TN after tax) and the total cost per month is $74.56 each, or $149.12 for both of us.
The only way it is mathematically better for DH and I is if we keep the phone longer than 2 years. But with no Straight Talk insurance available it is unlikely we would keep it longer.
Long story short, contract is better for us.
  • Did you have to buy their phones?

  • Did you have to buy their phones?

AT&T and TMobile phones will transfer to Straight Talk but my Verizon phone wont because it is 4G LTE and Straight talk currently doesnt accept 4G LTE or iPhones from Verizon.
