WIJFR: The Ocean at the End of the Lane (NS)

All of you Gaimaniacs will be happy to hear that I really loved this one!  I've read a few Neil Gaiman books now and always feel underwhelmed.  I've enjoyed all of them, but I guess maybe I had really high expectations or something, because I've never been blown away the way that I always expected to be.  But this was such a nice little story.  I loved how dreamlike it all felt at the end, and I loved how it sort of felt autobiographical at times (the little boy with books for best friends, totally ready to believe wholeheartedly in these other worlds . . .)  It was really good.  I liked it a lot, and I'm really happy that I picked it up on a whim at the library last weekend.

  • Yay!  I loved how nostalgic this book felt but yet it was so fantastical (is that even a word?) at the same time.  I love how NG can make me believe that shit like this is for real and could happen in real life.

  • Thanks for posting this. I have only read Neverwhere and, I felt that same as you. Although I enjoyed it, I wasn't blown away by it either. I'll have to pick this one up soon.

  • I loved this book. DH read it too, and actually got through it faster than I did. That NEVER happens.

EXACTLY.  His books make me believe in things in the most real way.  I have no idea how he does it.

He makes it all sounds so reasonable.  His tone is all very matter-of-fact, and I think that is what makes it so believable.
  • I read this a few weeks ago, it was my first ever NG book, and I was blown away. At the end I fully believed everything in the book could happen. I think he makes it very easy to visualize everything and that's what draws you in.
