Writing on the wall

Brinley is constantly drawing and coloring.  She's getting better about making sure her crayons and markers are put away.

Nolan however is also very stealth at sneaking her crayons and markers--which he then uses to scribble on the walls.  He knows he's not supposed to do it, and if you ask him if we should write on walls he says no and if you ask him what we should write on he says paper.

So...how do I actually get him to stop scribbling on the walls.  We give him creative time by putting him in his high chair and letting him color, paint, glue, etc. but the kid just can't seem to help himself.  DH touches up our paint weekly at this point.

Re: Writing on the wall

  • Do you make him wipe his art off of the wall?  I think he is old enough to have to help with that.  We have a crayon thief now too.  Mo figured out they make a tasty snack....

My suggestion as well. Dd only ever did it a couple times and I made her clean it up. We talk to her about valuing our things and taking good care of property, etc. the cleaning up part seemed to get the point across.

Yes, this.  Dd colored on her dresser once and dh told her that we had to pay a lot of money for that dresser and we want to keep our things looking nice.  Now when people come over she says, "I cost a lot of money for that dresser."

  • Hmm..we could try that...but I'm not sure he'd see wiping it off the wall as a punishment or an opportunity :-p.

Lala--how old was your DD when you told her about the money thing...I'm not sure DS is old enough to understand that.  Or maybe I'm underestimating him.

  • She was around 3, maybe a little younger.  I don't really know if she really understood but it hasn't happened since.

  • I put all crayons in a ziplock bag and keep them high up. Yes, it's a pain to have to go get them with the older ones want them, but you do what you have to do.

Also, ziplocks are challenging for little hands.
