New York Islanders Looking to Buy a Home in NJ and Commute to NYC

My husband and I are looking to buy a home in NJ and both work in midtown (NYC). Currently, we are renting an apartment in East Rutherford, NJ which is a cute town, a great 30-40min commute to the city but VERY EXPENSIVE. I'm originally from Staten Island, NY and my husband is from Long Island, NY so we're not familiar with all the NJ areas. Ideally, we would like to have a short commute to work but for the right home we can suck it up and do a one hour commute max. Being in the suburbs with access to shopping, restaurants and great schools is a must. Especially since we are planning to start a family this year.

Can anyone please recommend any towns in the area? I'd love your feedback.

  • Westfield, Maplewood, Summit, Garwood, Plainfield

Try Montclair or Clifton or Little Falls.

More: Cedar Grove, West Caldwell (or any of the Caldwells), Leonia, Maywood, Bogota or Weehawken.
  • You should also consider central jersey, if you're looking for a nice area, but want to stay within a budget. I work in Robbinsville, NJ which is really cute and a good area to raise a family. Surrounding areas are Cranbury, Hightstown and Princeton. My boss commutes to Manhattan by train, takes her 20 mins to get to the station and 60-75 mins on the train. Hope this helps !
  • The Edison/Woodbridge area is nice and has direct trains to NYC.

  • Thank you all for your suggestions and feedback. It's really helpful and much needed at this point.
  • Still looking for a home? I realize I'm pretty late! I think it depends a lot on budget... Summit, New Providence, Madison, Chatham, Millburn, Montclair, Maplewood, Berkeley Heights, and Bernards Twp are all really charming towns with good schools and most are within an hour train ride to NY Penn. Prices really range in these areas, though. Plus, as you would expect, you'd be able to get more for your money if you're willing to do a little work in the house.
