Stand mixer question; classic vs. artisan

I was very generously given a KitchenAid Classic (K45SS) stand mixer by my future mother-in-law when she got a spiffier one this past Christmas. I have had my heart set on an Artisan for awhile now but a free stand mixer is a free stand mixer! I don't know how many years old the one she gave me is but is it worth paying for the Artisan? Are the features/attachments that much better?

Re: Stand mixer question; classic vs. artisan

  • My understanding is the Artisan mixer has a little more power and the bowl is a little bigger. It looks like the attachments are interchangeable.

If it were me I would use the Classic while it lasted. Those mixers are expensive!

  • I have a classic mixer -  although would LOVE an artisan one . . . . . .  - but i have had no issues at all with the classic. I don't use it a ton - probably 1-2x/month, but its always worked just fine for me. The bowl is a little smaller if you like to do double/triple batches of things. But the bowl also goes fairly high up so I've found if I do want to double batches and its getting a little high up on the bowl I just slow down the speed and let it go for a minute or 2 longer.

I will say that I DO NOT have the scraper appliance (not sure what its called!) and I would LOVE that one. But . . . in the future! haha
