In need of advice as we are new to this home buying game

we have found a home in a very small town and made an offer. The sellers came back with a counter not much below list price and a bit higher than what would have been our ideal price. My hubby and I went ahead and agreed on that offer plus seller covering closing. We just had the inspection today which showed a few things that really do need fixing before we would move in. I personally want to ask them to lower the price some and we can do the repairs. Hubby wants to just ask them to fix and not counter as he doesn't want to lose the house. I don't want to lose out either but feel torn as where to go next...suggestions?
