Dog boots?

I have a big dog (English lab) and he loves snow, but the past couple days seem to be bothering is feet when he goes out.  He's been walking on 3 legs out in the snow.  I don't see any visible problem with his foot.  Maybe the ground is just too dang cold?   I am wondering if he would tolerate boots.  If your dog wears boots, let me know about them.  Thanks!

Re: Dog boots?

  • My dog had issues this morning too. She was hopping around so it clearly looked like it was too cold on her paws.
I have no suggestions though. I'm pretty sure my dog would eat boots if I tried to put them on her!

  • Our lab used to do this and so did our shephard/great dane mix. Our American Bulldog does it and our Boston Terrier takes it to a new level and tries to lift three at a time. The snow gets packed in between their pads. They make dog shoes but none of my dogs would have ever worn them. Google dogs in shoes videos, it is usually unsuccessful because they cannot feel the ground. If you do go that route, I would go with something made for hunting dogs.

Really it is just too cold for them to be out any longer than to go to the bathroom.

Three legs at one time? I commend his efforts!  I am sure buying boots would be just throwing money out the window.  I just feel bad for the poor guy.  Who wants to go to the bathroom in below zero temps?

  • That musher's secret might be a good alternative to boots.  Thanks for the tip!

  • Well, are AB is making a valiant effort of not pooping. He refuses to do anything more than pee. Poor thing.

  • so, our dogs are small so we have problems with the snow being too deep too and so we have had to shovel the yard so they will go outside and do their business.  it seems to help with the frozen paws, or else they have just smartened up and are only going out when they REALLY need to go and can be quick about it.  Mo however has made his #2 while standing on just his back to feet.  It is comical to say the least. I think we will all be happy when the yard thaws again (well aside from the mess I have to clean up)

but yea, no boots at our house. it is an infrequent issue and no way would they tolerate them.
