Disposable Diapers Vs Reusable.

Husband and I are TTC so I have been looking at Baby this and thats.

What are your thoughts on reusable diapers
What method did you use with your child?

Re: Disposable Diapers Vs Reusable.

  • We use disposable.

My BFF used cloth. When she was using a diaper service, it was fine but when she switched to using at home she found she was wasting a lot of water washing then multiple times to get them clean. Plus she couldn't use diaper rash cream with them, so she had to keep disposables around for when her kiddo needed the cream. So se eventually went to disposable.

Another thing to consider is if your LO will be in daycare. Some daycares will only use disposable.

  • we use cloth and have learned that there are a TON of myths that come along with them. we can use diaper creams that we were previously told we couldn't (just one of the many myths we discovered). we never used a diaper service. we did them to save money and using a service would have made it cost the same as sposies. i do diaper laundry about every 4 days. it's a rinse cycle, a wash cycle and another rinse cycle, so really NBD to us. until he was about 12 months we had spent a total of $350ish on diapers, including the few packs of sposies we used when he was a NB. recently we switched over from prefolds and covers to all in ones and that cost us OOP about $120 (i bought second hand and then i traded someone 7 of my diapers for her 10 diapers). it works out for us! we had daycare's on board to do it as well, since legally there is nothing that says they can't (they think there is, but they would be wrong). we ended up not sending LO to DC though, so it didn't matter in the end.

  • I would be interested in trying cloth, but I nanny for a family that gave up on them after about 14-15 months when stripping them just seemed to stop doing the trick. We have pretty hard water in our area, so without a water softener we may decide that cloth isn't worth it.

My cats keep shredding the disposable ones. I'm considering trying out the cloth to see if that works better for us. The cloth will probably let me cut holes for their tails much more easily too.  I'll let you know how it goes.

ETA: Darn nest cut me off before I was done. Seriously though, we really want to use cloth ones when/if the time ever comes. I'm not opposed to 'sposies for babysitters or when we're out. I just prefer the "feel" of cloth. Seems for comfortable for a kid. Most gals here on GP don't have kids yet so if you want real life answers, try GPM.

The cat tolerates the diapers. It's my damn dog who hates wearing it.

Actually, this really isn't funny, because my dog does wear a diaper. He has roid rage and likes to pee on things. We put him in a cloth pee belt with an industrial sized maxi pad. I hate buying those things.

  • @MRads - Poor puppy :( That's a bummer. My childhood dog was in a diaper for the last 2 years of his life because he constantly dribbled (he was OLD) so I can understand! My mom ended up just making them, but what a pain it was to have to change them all the time :(

Aw, poor pup! We dogsat my sister's dog at our house last year. She went into heat for the first time while she was here (of course). We put the canine cloth diaper on her and used female pads. The neighborhood kids came over and asked me why the dog was wearing a diaper. I snorted and said, "Ask your mom." Bahahahaha! My sister still owes me for that...

  • DH & I have discussed this a couple time.  I would love to be able to use cloth diapers (they're cuter), but I am not opposed to disposable.  DH - it's all about the cost to him (over the long term), so cloth diapers get his vote.  We'll have to see what actually happens when the time comes.

when you have a baby, there is going to be shit on their clothes when they have blow outs. it could be on the sheets as well. and it's going to go......ding ding ding! in your washer! so, yeah, not escaping the shit in your washer. you'll rinse it off as much as you can before putting it the wash, just like cloth diaper people do. enjoy the shit show that infants are! and vomit. and everything else gross that you have to deal with and often touch.

  • We only spend about 40 bucks max a month on disposable diapers (and we use pampers swaddlers, so not the cheap stuff).  You're not going to save yourself 800 bucks a year going with cloth.

I <3 being able to throw the poop filled diapers away, and never having to look at them again.  God bless disposable diapers.

  • We also use cloth diapers and I love it. Poop doesn't go in the washer - it gets flushed. I've spent $400 on cloth diapers and supplies that will last us until this kid potty trains AND for the next kid(s). My kiddo has sensitive skin and the cloth is so much more kind to her. There is cloth diaper safe cream that works well. With my stash, I wash diapers once or twice a week and line dry everything. I'm too cheap to run the dryer that often.

There are a lot of myths and there's a lot of solutions to potential issues. I'm here if anyone has more questeions

  • I would like to use cloth.  I guess once I would do some more research on them I would decide between the two.

  • We use a combination of cloth and disposable. Our kid is the most regular pooper I have even seen. He goes every morning between 10-10:30am (and while playing in our kiddie pool if we get in it). So usually his last diaper change before 10am I put him in a disposable (and then back in cloth after he goes) and when we swim I put him in a swim diaper. It works well for us. Also, poop doesn't bother me, so if he were to go in the cloth it's not that big of a deal to me...he is just so regular that I take advantage of it! :)
