food bloggers - a "rules" question for you!

I want to do a blog post about three recipes...one is an adaptation from an allrecipes.com recipe, one is from a cookbook, and one is a recipe I re-created from a unique dish at a restaurant.  What are the rules about posting these recipes as far as copyrights go?  Can I even post all of the recipes or do I need to link back? Do I need to mention the restaurant name?  Any other food blog rules that I need to know would be appreciated!

Re: food bloggers - a "rules" question for you!

  • If I adapt a recipe, I always post a link to the original to give them credit. I don't think I've posted any from cookbooks, but I would either post a link to where you could buy the cookbook (ex: Amazon) or just name the cookbook. I'm not sure about the restaurant, to be honest.

As long as you are giving credit where credit is due, and you are adding a personal touch, and putting everything into your own words, you should be fine.

  • A list of ingredients cannot be copyrighted. The cooking instructions and the introduction to the recipe can be, so always wrote both in your own words.

As far as citing, I'd say "adapted from AllRecipes" and link back. Then, "recipe from X cookbook" and link to Amazon. Then "Inspired by Such and Such restaurant" and link to their site.

And of course, always use your own pictures.
