Turkey or Egypt?

Hi everyone!

Am heading to London (where one of my best friends lives) this fall. Am going to visit Scotland & Greece as well. (Greece has been #1 on my to go list for years.) Would like to add one more location close to Greece since I don't know when I'll be able to go again. Was thinking about Turkey (Istanbul or Bodrum) or Cairo, Egypt. I'm more of a backpack/hostel traveller if that helps.

Has anyone been to either country or have any suggestions/advice? Anything is appreciated, thanks!

Re: Turkey or Egypt?

  • I haven't been to Egypt, because I want to visit some places that haven't been safe to travel the past few years (kicking myself that I didn't go back when I could).

However, I love Turkey. It's probably my single favorite country for travel, because there's so much variety. History, nature, food, people... It was all great, and I'm eager to go back to visit more.

Istanbul was a lot of fun, but I really loved Cappadocia. The scenery was incredible, and we met so many great people there. In addition to the usual friendly locals (everyone in Turkey was so welcoming), we met a lot of great travelers that we really clicked with.

I'd like to go to Bodrum some day to do a Blue Cruise when I'm looking for a more relaxed holiday.

How long do you have? We spent 5 days in Istanbul, which felt like a good amount of time. We were able to see everything I wanted without rushing. And we spent 2½ days in Cappadocia. I think I would have liked another full day to be able to do some hiking. (We also spent a day in Ankara, which was interesting, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're into modern Turkish history.)
