Rabbit Owners

I have three rabbits they are Roxy mix, I have had them since they were babies. They live in wooden hutch indoors. How do I get them to stop eating there cage? They are chewing the wood all up.

Re: Rabbit Owners

  • Do they have enough environmental enrichment? A lot of times that is out of bordem. Also consider giving them more hay to chew on throughout the day. Or break up what you give them into more frequent smaller portions. If that doesn't help you may be able to try something to deter such as red pepper in water sprayed on the wood.

  • 2 big reasons why they could be chewing on their hutch:
    1. They are bored. Do they get to run around for at least an hour a day for exercise?
    2. Rabbit's teeth grow constantly so chewing on their hutch could be helping them keep their teeth down. Do they have something else in their area that they can chew on? Maybe that would deter them from the hutch.
I wouldn't recommend rationing out their hay - they need an unlimited amount every day. 85% of their daily diet should come from hay, 10% from fresh veggies and 5% from high quality pellets.

    Good luck!

  • Do they have things or toys to chew on? They make rabbit toys especially for chewing. Do you let them out of the hutch at all? If so they should be let out a few times a day if possible.

  • I used to give my rabbits fruit tree twigs to munch on, back when I had a few fruit trees close by.  Right now I've been giving them wooden chew toys to toss around.  That helps with the nibbling.  And lots and lots of hay.
